Character Analysis

The name of the story that I chose is called the mystery of Sasassa valley. The story is about two friends who set of for a wealth hunting expedition to South Africa. The friends are Tom and Jack. The person that I have chosen as my protagonist is Jack, who is also the narrator of the story. From the time they set on for their journey, the two friends undergo a lot of difficult times until one of them-Tom starts believing that he was born to have bad luck. Right from the first word of the story, Jack’s character as a caring fried is revealed when he introduces his friend Tom. The reader is able to know from Jack’s conversation the life of Tom. It makes the reader to understand that Jack is friend who is concerned and happy with the friend’s success.

Jack’s speech is full hope and praise for the friend to the extent that even when the friend is at the verge of giving up, he represents hope and encouragement. He makes the reader to expect positive attributes from the friend who happens to be a person, who gets apprehensive very easily, it is because of this character that he able to narrate the story, meaning that he is a character who brings us the events of what happened during the journey and the hunt for the treasure. This character is the one that also makes him to be able to be very supportive of his friend’s idea that eventually makes them to end somewhere.

The character has been fully rendered because he is the face of the story. There would be not story without him because he is the one who introduces even the other characters, basically he is the one telling the story and he explicitly discuses the events very vividly hence making the story to be graphic. You are actually able to visualize the vents that happen in the valley because of his approach. His character as a caring friend comes out clearly at every instance when the friend is emotionally down, for example when there is a suspicion that the friend could be sick, he feels that that shouldn’t happen. Towards the end of the story they realized that they had mistake some salt for diamond, both of them are affected but he tries to go and cheer up the friend. As if that was not enough, the friend changes the character and instead of complaining he agrees with the friend in going back to the valley to get the actually Diamond .

At the end of the story, the character has experienced some growth because unlike when they came back with nothing, at the end of the story him and his friend end up being rich and they also empower the person –Dick who gave them the idea of Sasassa Valley. As the story progresses we see a hopeful and calm person but at the end, the hope is transformed into reality and some excitement come in. (Doyle 23-20) Another aspect of his growth is that he has grown from a person who was depend on chances to a person of substance to the extent he can invite people to visit him when they come to South Africa.
