PARAGRAPH ONE: The purpose of this research is to:
State two specific goals and cite.
PARAGRAPH TWO: Define key terms and cite.
PARAGRAPH THREE: List 3-4 scholarly article studies involving statistics, containing a
methods/results (scientific) and an ethical and cultural study.
The purpose of this research is to highlight the detrimental effects of social media use on
mental health, and more specifically on anxiety and depression. Recent research has found that
there are approximately 4 billion social media users world-wide each year. Platforms garnering
the most traffic include Twitter, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram. While social media provides
platforms in which people from all areas of the world and all demographics can experience
connection, there is also substantial evidence that social media is contributing to anxiety and
depression in people of all ages (Karim, 2020).
While social media has an affect on people of all ages, adolescents seem particularly
affected by the negative impacts social media can have as studies have shown that up to 20
percent of adolescents will report mental health issues and this number has increased 70% over
the past decade. While it is an alarming statistic it is difficult to determine a specific cause,
however, as this statistic has risen with the increased use of social media, it is likely that they are
connected (Keles, 2020).
Studies establishing negative mental health effects on social media will be examined
within this paper, as well as statistical changes in mental health that increased as social media
usage increased. Many of these studies were conducted using online surveys establishing both
social media time and levels of depression and anxiety (Aalbers, 2018). A second study will be
evaluated to determine changes in adolescents with reduced social media exposure (Orben,
2020). A third will look at how adolescents are more prone to social media negative effects and
possible solutions to this connected conundrum (O’Reilly, 2020).
