West Los Angeles College Covid 19 and Academic Integrity Discussion

Part 1
Present and discuss a topic that you are interested in researching for this course. Explain why
this topic interests you. Provide a brief background of the topic and speculate on arguments
you could pose or problems you could solve. Additionally, draft a potential problem
statement. Pose ideas and solicit feedback from your peers on your ideas.
In your responses, provide your peers with constructive criticism. Identify topics that might
seem too broad or too narrow in focus. Identify possible challenges and offer ideas and
solutions for improvement.
Posting directions: Title your post with your name (e.g., Jenny Smith Topic Proposal) and
write in your submission or attach a document for peer review.
Part 2
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:
“There is an important difference between intentional and unintentional plagiarism, and all
judgments about plagiarism, along with any punishments for plagiarizing, should be adjusted
to account for that difference.”
Respond by either supporting or opposing this statement. List your reasons and cite at least
two sources. You may use Internet or library search sources for this discussion.
Part 3
Post a draft of your scientific and mathematical/analytical inquiry paper for peer review. You
should also post your level 1 and level 2 research questions. Identify any questions or
challenges you faced with the assignment, or mention something new you learned about the
research question and inquiry paper process. Pose specific questions you would like your
peers to address.
Posting directions: Title your post with your name (e.g., Jenny Smith Scientific/Math Inquiry

Part 4
This week, you will prepare for your ethical and cultural inquiry. Consider how culture can
impact healthcare decisions and outcomes. Read the following article from the Western

Western Journal of Medicine, 172(5), 335–336. doi:10.1136/ewjm.172.5.335 (Links to an
external site.)
Discuss the following:
1. Do you agree with the writer’s premise that treating patients with respect is not enough,
and it is necessary to learn about the specific customs of other cultures in order to provide
quality health care? Explain your reasoning and provide examples.
2. Do you think there is a danger in stereotyping when discussing cultural norms? Explain
and provide examples.
3. Which cultures and customs are you most familiar with?
4. Does culture play a significant role in the healthcare issue that you are researching?
Explain.
In your replies to peers, share your views and your knowledge about different cultural beliefs
associated with health care.
Part 5
Post a draft of your cultural and ethical inquiry paper for peer review. You should also post
your level 1 and level 2 research questions. Identify any questions or challenges you faced

and inquiry paper process. Pose specific questions you would like your peers to address.
Posting directions: Title your post with your name (e.g., Jenny Smith Ethical/Cultural
Inquiry Paper) and write in your submission or attach a document for peer review.
Part 6
This week, you will practice producing a screencast video presentation that allows you to
report your progress on the final paper while also preparing you to build a quality final
presentation for the course.
A screen–cast video (for this course) should be understood as a recording of a PowerPoint (or
Prezi) in Slideshow Mode, narrated/presented by you within a picture-in-picture video.
1. Build a three–slide PowerPoint (or Prezi) presentation that includes text and graphics.
Outline your answers to the following questions:

What are some specific questions you have concerning the final argument paper?
What is your time–management plan for compiling and editing your final paper?
What parts of your final paper do you anticipate will take the most time and attention?
For example:
o Incorporating instructor feedback in your perspective papers
o Reworking the perspective papers into one cohesive paper
o Writing the introduction, conclusion, or abstract
o APA formatting
o Revising for grammar, spelling, and punctuation
2. Videos can be recorded using any software or tool, but all videos are required to be
uploaded to My Panopto Videos for assignment submission.
You can also use the Panopto Desktop Recording tool to create your video.
3. Your presentation should be 1–2 minutes in length. Show yourself on video narrating your
PowerPoint (providing your answers to the questions above about your final paper).
4. After shooting the screencast, experiment with editing (e.g., chop, trim).
5. Publish your completed screencast video to your My Panopto Videos area in Canvas.
6. Finally, in the Discussion Forum main post, Reply and then use the Mashups tool to select
your completed screencast video and publish it to the discussion forum.
Part 7
Post a draft of your final paper’s abstract, introduction, and conclusion for peer review. Be
sure to include the problem you are addressing. Identify any questions or challenges you are
facing with the assignment, or mention something new that you have learned. Pose specific
questions you would like your peers to address.
Posting directions: Title your post with your name (e.g., Jenny Smith Final paper) and write
in your submission or attach a document for peer review.
Part 8
This week, provide a progress report of your oral presentation by addressing the following:

How will you maximize your strengths?
In your replies, answer questions, provide suggestions, and share your experiences with your
peers.

the proposed solution, and obstacles related to the solutions.
