Discussion: Historical Development of Operations Management

Operations management today is not what it used to be. It has evolved in its relationship to other business functions, the roles it plays, and the strategic decisions it helps to formulate. In Table 1.2, “Historical Development of Operations Management,” on page 11 of Operations Management: An Integrated Approach, the authors describe the historical development of operations management.

• How have the historical events listed in the table influenced the management of operations in today’s business environment?
• In what ways does the role of operations management serve as a business transformation process?
• In what ways does operations management differ in manufacturing organizations vs. service organizations?
• In what ways does complexity impact operations management in multinational organizations?
