BS 105 Questions for Water Quality Lab Fall 2013
1. On the basis of the data gathered from the two water samples, which appears to be more potable (suitable for drinking), and why? This will require that you consult an appropriate web site to locate state or national water quality standards and associated information!! (3 points)
2. Briefly explain what “alkalinity” and “hardness” actually measure. In other words, what do these measurements tell you about the water supply? (2 points)
3. Identify one additional water quality test that you would perform to help determine the potential potability of these two samples. Explain why this would be an important parameter to measure.
(3 points)
4. Offer a plausible explanation for the higher level of nitrates in the water from Magill Hall. In other words, what are logical sources of nitrate pollution that might cause “contamination” of this water supply? (3 points)
5. Why are elevated nitrate levels of concern in drinking water supplies (refer to an appropriate web site again)? Why are high nitrate levels of concern in a lake or pond? (3 points)
6. If you were a homeowner, which water supply would be of greater concern in terms of potential damage to the plumbing system and water appliances in your home? Explain! (3 points)
7. Which water supply (if any) offers a better buffering capacity? Why is this important? (3 points)
