SUB: WEEK 4 DISCUSSION FORUM – HYPOTHESES, CONTROL
This weeks lecture videos discussed the role
of hypotheses in scientific research and
talked about possible sources of
spuriousness in relationships — or two
phenomena that co-vary but do not have a
cause-effect relationship.
Using your concepts and their empirical
referents from last weeks discussion post (or
new ones, if you needed to revise), construct
two properly specified hypotheses.
Remember that each hypothesis must
contain two and only two variables and
specify a direction (i.e. “an increase in A
causes an increase in B”). Then, discuss
briefly why your relationship is plausible
(believable) and testable (able to be carried
out in the real world) as well as any possible
sources of spuriousness, or variables that
are responsible for the variation in both your
IV and DV. You cannot use any examples
from the lecture videos…think up your own!
(Note: This is a great chance to think
through the variables and relationships you
have in mind for your research proposal an
get some feedback.)

SUB: WEEK 5: DISCUSSION FORUM: UNIVARIATE STATISTICS
This weeks lecture videos have focused on
levels of measurement: nominal, ordinal,
interval, and ratio. The level at which a
variable is measured dictates what
information we can aquire about it, both in
terms of central location and dispersion.
For this weeks discussion post of no more
than 150 words, provide an example of a
variable at each level of measurement. And
list all the measurements of central location
and dispersion you can find for each
variable. For instance, for nominal, you may
choose Religious Preference and note that
you can only measure the mode and v-ratio.
DO NOT use examples from the lecture/lab
videos (and try to avoid what others have
already posted). Think of your own! Be
creative!

SUB: WEEK 06 DISCUSSION FORUM
This week’s lecture videos focus on the idea
of statistical inference. That is, estimating
characteristics about your population of
cases (all cases) from a sample (random
selection of cases). Your task this week is to
find an example of statistical inference used
directly or cited in the news. This can be a
journalist citing a poll, referring to a survey,
or summarizing other findings arrived at
through inference. Make sure to search in
reputable news sources such as CNN, BBC,
Washington Post, TIME, etc. Once you find
an article, write a post that lists where the
article is from, when it was published, how
the author is using or referring to statistical
inference (how the evidence is used to make
a point). Conclude with a few thoughts on
whether you found the article pursuasive.
