Stage 1 & Stage 2 Final Project: Bullet and Cartridge Case NotesFor Stage 1: Cartridge case comparisons, there are eight unknowns and eight
knowns. For Stage 2: Bullet comparison, there are four unknowns and four knowns
with six land and groove impressions.
For Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Final Project, it is necessary to take notes during your
comparisons on FirearmsID.com. For case documentation in most firearms
identification laboratories, it is a requirement to have photographs of the
identifications. Therefore, it is a requirement in this class to take a photograph of
the identification. Once you have made a decision as to whether a known sample
and an unknown sample were fired in the same firearm, the student must take a
screenshot of the identification. This screenshot can then be pasted into a word
document. Under each screenshot, you should type what the toolmark is and why
you consider this fired in the same firearm. This should be done for all of the
toolmarks that helped you make your determination for each comparison. For
bullets and cartridge case identification, you need to take at least two screenshots.
The bullets must have two different images and cartridge cases should have two
different toolmarks or at least two different areas of the same toolmark.
See the rubrics to see how your grade for Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Final Project
will be graded (called Cartridge Case Comparison Rubric and Bullet Comparison
Rubric).
