Business Law Interview
Directions: Each of you in the class will have varying majors but all business leaders will
encounter issues with employment law. This project is designed to allow you customize the
learning experience to maximize the emersion. To complete this project, you will need to
identify one business (at least 10 employees and not a sole proprietorship) associated with your
major and schedule an interview (Zoom or in person) with a company leader. In that discussion,
you will seek to understand the top employment law issues facing the company specifically in
the area of hiring and retention. You will then seek a copy of their company handbook and
identify applicable policies to the identified issues. Finally, you will write an 2-3 page essay
addressing the following parts:
Part I: Business Description
Provide a brief discussion of the business type, size, whether they are private or a government
contractor, and interviewee without disclosing names, as anonymity will likely increase honesty
in the answers. Information contained in this section can include why you chose this business
and its applicability to your major but that is not the major focus. The primary focus is to
provide your reader with an understanding of the type of business so that they can better
understand which laws apply.
Part II: Legal Support
Discuss the current legal state (state and federal laws along with any current precedence) of the
identified issue(s) applicable to that business based on their location and number of employees.
(For example, if this is an Arkansas business with more than 15 employees, does ADA apply and
why? What is the ADA and provide some history)
Part III: Discussion of Company Policy
Provide the company hiring policy or job posting (redact the name and other identifiable
characteristics) and discuss its strengths and weaknesses in light of the current legal state.
Part IV: What Would You Do?
Discuss how you would address these hiring issues within your future company whether by
policy or training. How will you recruit and train your employees? How will you decrease your
company liability for negligent hiring, illegal questioning, or improper pre-employment testing?

Final Reminder: As a business leader, you are only as good as your word. As you stated in your
interview introduction, the information garnered from this interview needs to remain
confidential, so please make sure that you do not identify the business or business leader by
name in your assignment. Remember that this assignment allows you an opportunity to learn,
as well as build a connection to a business leader who may be your future employer. Please
take the time to write a hand written thank you note to your interviewee, as you will need to
upload this to complete the assignment.
