Program Learning Outcome(s): N/A
Institutional Learning Outcome(s): N/A
Purpose of this Assessment
The final assessment for this competency is to develop a transportation and communication plan that
integrates cost, freight terms, and optimal flow of materials suited for transportation carriers.
Imagine that you are hired as a transportation advisor for a large company that specializes in the
production and shipment of a wide array of goods internationally and domestically. Select an existing
company OR create your own company that ships a selection of 3 different types of goods (these could
include glassware, petroleum, lumber, electronics, or perishable food). Your job is to develop a
comprehensive transportation plan that considers the benefits and costs of the various modes of
transportation, the roles of various stakeholders, government regulations (particularly the impact of CTPAT), and options for tracking, performance measurement, and resolution processes.
You will also need to develop a communication plan for external (suppliers, customers) and internal
(employees) stakeholders.
Items Required for Submission
1. A 10 to 12 page paper with your proposed transportation plan. This plan should include a
external images, graphs, diagrams, and documented research to support your proposal.
2. A 15 to 20 slide PowerPoint with a communication plan for external stakeholders.
3. A 15 to 20 slide PowerPoint with a communication plan for internal stakeholders.
4. An APA style reference page that lists all the resources you used to develop your transportation
and communication plan.

Step ONE: Plan & Research

Review the Quality, Sourcing Analysis, Materials and Inventory Management, and International,
Local, Domestic, and Insourcing competencies, as needed. These competencies will provide you
the foundation for the development of your transportation and communication plan.
Review the material in this Transportation competency as it pertains to the benefits and costs of
each mode of transportation, roles of various stakeholders, delivery tracking and performance
measurement options, and development of communication plans.
Briefly describe what you think are the values, mission, and logistics of this company. As you
begin your research, make sure to consider the specifics for this particular company.
Use the following resources to help you begin your research:
• UPS Case Study: Inside Out
• UPS Consumer Goods/Retail
• Multi-Model Planning
• U.S. Department of Transportation (GIS)
• Transportation and Logistics Case Studies
• Case Studies on Transport Policy
• RFID Journal
• Asset Tracking Case Studies
• TPAT Resources
Step TWO: Develop Your Transportation Plan
Your transportation plan should be specific to the company you selected OR created. In order to
synthesize your transportation plan into a comprehensive paper, you must complete the following:

Briefly describe your company’s mission, product/services, and background. Provide enough
contextual background information to inform your transportation plan.
Briefly describe why a transportation plan is needed and what factors should be taken into
consideration when selecting a mode of transportation and delivery tracking system.
Identify and rank each mode of transportation for the company. Assign an approximate
percentage of company use (as well product use) for each mode of transportation. Make sure to
provide supporting evidence for your percentages and rankings by describing the potential
benefits and costs of each viable mode. Create a visual to support your proposal.
Propose a viable option for a delivery tracking system. Describe the logistics of this tracking
system and why it would benefit the company. Discuss any challenges that might occur in
implementing this system. Create a flowchart of how this tracking system will function.
Include relevant information on methods of performance measurements and resolution
processes that would be used.
Discuss any other challenges, in terms of regulations, incorporation of C-TPAT, freight terms,
costs, where breakdowns occur, and other potential resolution processes, in implementation of
your transportation plan.

Step THREE: Communication Plans

Create two PowerPoint presentations (each 15-20 slides) that respectively communicates your
plan to external (suppliers and customers) and internal (employees) stakeholders. Describe the
roles of each group and what each group would need to know in order to implement this
transportation plan.

Include visuals as needed.
Make sure your presentations are clear, concise, easy to understand, and visually appealing.
Step FOUR: Complete Checklist for Submission
Before you submit, check to see if you believe you have met the criteria noted below. Did you:
Paper Component (Description, Analysis, Evaluation)
 Provide background and context specific to a transportation plan for the selected company?
 Thoroughly describe all viable forms of transportation, delivery tracking systems, measurement
and resolution processes and transportation logistics (including a discussion of roles, impact of
C-TPAT, and relevant freight terms)?
 Provide thoughtful recommendations, by evaluating and ranking all feasible transportation
modes, delivery tracking options, measurement methods, and resolution processes, and provide
logical reasoning and evidence to support these evaluations?
 Create a clear, understandable, and innovative visual display and flowchart to support the
transportation plan summary, analysis, and/or evaluation?
 Meaningfully connect the transportation plan to the company’s mission and needs?
 Synthesize knowledge of transportation roles, options, and logistics in order to present a
comprehensive plan that takes into account cost, challenges, and customer requirements?
 Summarize your findings, issues, and considerations that you may not have fully addressed?
 Use three or more scholarly sources and current articles that are referenced correctly in APA
format?
 Synthesize all of the above into a 10-12 page paper that is logical, well-written, and the required
length? Did you proofread and ensure that spelling, grammar and punctuation are accurate and
APA formatting standards are followed?
 Create a Reference page that lists all the resources used to develop your transportation and
communication plans?
PowerPoint Component (Communication Plans)
 Develop two communication plans (one to external stakeholders, and one to internal
stakeholders) that are comprehensive and clear?
 Highlight the roles of the respective stakeholders and provide a persuasive and logical argument
as to the viability of your transportation plan?

length, creative, and easy to read?
 Format the presentations appropriately and design them in a way that facilitates viewer
understanding (with no grammatical errors)?
