TRAN5171 Analysing Transport and SocietyCoursework Resit assignment (July 2022)
This assessed work aims to allow you to explore the significance of methodology in achieving validity
and confidence in datasets, analysis and findings; and to describe research approaches. You will find the
lecture material in the first part of the module to be most relevant.
This essay should be 1000 words and is worth 25% of the overall module mark. The submission deadline
is 15th August 2022.
Please choose one of the two questions below to answer.
Question 1:
First provide a brief definition of how qualitative-based and quantitative-based
methods. Then go on to describe how they should be conducted. Then compare how validity is achieved
in each of the different methodological approaches and finally discuss the importance of validity in
research. (100%)
Question 2:
Provide a brief and careful description of the methodology reported in the article by
Banerjee, U., and Julian Hine. 2014. “Identifying the underlying constructs linking urban form and travel
behaviour using a grounded theory approach.” International Journal of Environmental Science and
Technology 11, no. 8: 2217-2232. Then using Mason (2002) assess if the research reported in the article
followed ‘good conduct’ in qualitative research and using evidence provide an assessment of how
validity was achieved in the research.
Criteria
The assessment criteria for this coursework are below:
The quality and persuasiveness of argument
Demonstrates accuracy in understanding, e.g., definitions
Demonstrates critical thinking
Demonstrates originality and innovation
Uses evidence effectively
The use of evidence and material
Relevant illustrative examples
Relevant material
The structure and organisation of argument and material
Demonstrates clarity of essay structure, organisation of argument and material
Appropriate and brief use of aims and conclusions
Consistency of focus
Word limit
EVERYTHING except the title, content of tables and figures, reference list or bibliography, and any
appendices is included in the word count. The content included in tables, figures and appendices should
be appropriate for the assignment. Appendices (if used) should include only supplementary text and
data, rather than text and data that is essential to the argument presented in the essay.
The title of the article is the feasibility analysis of the existing and
possible future transportation VR products and services in the
current and future Shenzhen transportation market.
In the first part, I will first introduce some of what VR is in existence,
and some of the current VR transportation products.
In the second part, I will take out two of the above VR products and
analyze the feasibility of these two products in Shenzhen. I will try to
use SWOT analysis and PEST analysis, from the Shenzhen policy
(macro-level, the Chinese government’s functional planning for
Shenzhen: the capital of science and technology; micro-level, various
specific policies such as the use of new energy vehicles and license
plate numbers Restricted travel), citizens’ purchasing power and
purchasing propensity (high housing prices and huge cost of living
determine the strength of citizens’ purchasing power, and the average
age is the lowest in China’s first-tier cities, which means that compared
with other first-tier cities in China, Shenzhen has a Young people with
a larger proportion of the overall population. Coupled with the fact
that Shenzhen has more technology companies than other first-tier
cities in China, the proportion of people engaged in technology
careers in Shenzhen will also be higher. So Shenzhen is a place with
more wealthy, a city for young people working in the technology
industry), and the current situation of transportation (Shenzhen’s land
area is much smaller than other first-tier cities in China, but the total
population is almost the same as other first-tier cities, which means
that transportation resources are tight).
At the same time, in the second part, I will take Guangzhou, which is
also in Guangdong Province (positioned as a non-tech city, with more
elderly people, slower pace of life, weaker purchasing power of
residents, large land area, and lack of transportation resources) as the
control group. The analysis shows that Shenzhen, which has tight
transportation resources, more young people, higher technological
level, and stronger purchasing power and desire of citizens, is a huge
market for VR transportation products.
In the third part, I will try to use a company with VR transportation
technology as the main body of Porter’s five forces model analysis
method to analyze the feasibility of entering the Shenzhen market, so
as to analyze the VR transportation technology in the Shenzhen
market from another perspective. feasibility.
In the fourth part, I will try to look into the future, whether it is possible
for the cyberpunk-like scene in Blade Runner to appear in Shenzhen,
or whether the Shenzhen traffic will be connected to the Metaverse in
the future (this part has not been decided yet)
A feasibility analysis of the existing and possible future
transportation VR products and services in the current and future
Shenzhen transportation market.
The objective is to: “explore the usability of VR technology (a) and
(b)… in two case studies to understand the feasibility of improving
demand
management
and
planning
future
transport
for
sustainability”
The research questions that will be investigated are:
1. Which VR technologies are most suitable for use in transport
planning
2. Which VR technologies are most suitable for use in different
kinds of cities
3. Which VR technologies are most suitable for demand
management implementations.

Chapter 1: Introduction
The aim of this chapter is to: describe the state of knowledge on the
use of VR in transport planning.
Output of this chapter: (1). a typology of virtual reality technologies
and potential areas of application.(2) selection of two VR technologies
for use in the analysis in this dissertation.
Chapter 2: Case Study cities: Shenzhen and Guangzhou
The aim of this chapter is to: describe the case study cities in a way
that provides the data for use in the subsequent analyses.
Material to use: data on socio-demographic characteristics, data on
the transport system; data on the use of the transport system;
description of transport plans; description of the market for
technology and technological adoption.
“from the Shenzhen policy (macro-level, the Chinese government’s
functional planning for Shenzhen: the capital of science and
technology; micro-level, various specific policies such as the use of
new energy vehicles and license plate numbers Restricted travel),

Chapter 3: Virtual Reality Technology
The aim of this chapter is to: describe the Virtual Reality technology
that is available for application in transport planning in the case study
cities.
Material to use: This chapter will build on the review of literature in
Chapter 1. Additional material will come from published papers on
virtual reality technologies and published papers on applying virtual
reality in transport planning.
This chapter will adopt a critical approach.
“I will first introduce some of what VR is in existence, and some of the
current VR transportation products.”
