Instructions

This assessment requires you to identify and access product information and it is designed for you to practise interpreting the information you have researched. These skills are relevant to developing an understanding of tourism products and services, enabling you to select the most suitable for your clients’ needs and requirements.

Y

ou are required to study the information provided, as well as conduct further research of current sources. Considerations include:

· Textbook: O’Shannessy, V; Minett, D & Hyde, G (2008 or later edition) The Road toTourism. Pearson Education Australia, Sydney Australia.

· Travel brochures and tour itineraries including details of relevant products and services, costs, and local attractions to meet expectations and requirements for a range of client needs.

· The following textbook is not essential, but provides very useful information: Perlitz, L and Elliott, S. The Products – The Travel Handbook series (2000). Pearson Education, Sydney Australia.

· Websites such as: Qantas and other airline timetables; coach, rail, cruise and ferry timetables.

· Hard copies of AFTA and other travel insurance organisation brochures.

· Some industry resources such as: Traveller Information Manuals (TIM); Travel Trade year book, TravelTrade and Travel Weekly magazines, online or other industry publications.

When completing this assignment you will need to clearly demonstrate your acquired knowledge; specifically the use of the phonetic alphabet, airline codes, interpretation of frequently-used tourism industry terminology and accurately calculate commissions, fees, charges and costs.

Note:

Ensure you show all ‘workings’ and calculations.

In your responses you will need to utilise destination information as relevant, identifying features and benefits of ‘packaged’ products and passes currently available, and consider other factors necessary to accommodate the different types of clients as described in the questions.

Remember to acknowledge the original authors where relevant throughout your assignment and provide a bibliography that details any resources including websites from which you have extracted information.

If you require additional space to write answers, make a note to the teacher on the page indicating there is more information to follow. Securely attach your answers on separate sheets that clearly identify the question to which you are responding and number the pages in sequence.

At the end of each answer, allow adequate space (at least eight (8) lines) for the teacher’s comments and feedback.

Note:

There are constant changes with internet websites, their content, URLs, hyperlinks, licenses or fees for use and other issues associated with online learning and technologies. Therefore the reference and resource information provided may be altered and/or become inaccessible without prior knowledge.

If you are unable to locate relevant information for your tourism studies or assessment research, contact your OTEN teachers for assistance or check the
Overview
section on your Online Learning Support site (OLS) under each applicable unit for any updates or changes.

Limitations

There are limitations associated with the sale of products and services and client participation. It is essential for all tourism employees to keep up to date with limitations such as: operational changes, price increases, seasonal factors affecting availability; safety and health issues, special requirements and licences that may impact on travel arrangements that clients have requested. In addition, clients expect travel consultants to be familiar with the particular terms and conditions relating to products and services they have on offer. For further information refer to textbook The Road to Tourism, Chapter: Access and Interpret Product Information.

Read the following scenario and answer the questions below.

Scenario

Two employees who work in your wholesale travel company, Paul Jacobsen and Ari Rogers have been requested to embark on a familiarisation tour in the Northern Territory. Upon their return they are required to prepare a report describing various products and services available in the region and recommend their suitability for various client types.

Paul will investigate and participate in a scuba diving and fishing tour leaving from Darwin, while Ari will evaluate local tour operators in Palm Valley and within local Indigenous Communities.

They will be driving a 4WD vehicle through Tennant Creek and Arnhem Land, located in Kakadu National Park (the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria are also regions of this National Park).

To prepare for their trip, Paul and Ari will need to research and determine any limitations associated with the destination/region they are visiting and the tourism activities in which they will participate.

a. Identify and briefly explain three (3) limitations that Paul and Ari will need to consider before embarking on their trip.

6 marks

To conduct further research, refer to relevant internet websites to assist with this task, for example

b.

Product risks

There are many risks associated with the sale of products and services in the travel industry. A tourism employee needs to keep up to date with operational changes, price increases, safety issues, seasonal factors affecting availability, and terms and conditions that relate to the products and services they are offering their clients. For further information refer to textbook The Road to Tourism, Chapter: Access and Interpret Product Information.

Read the following scenario which identifies three (3) risks associated with the sale of products and services in the travel industry and then answer the questions below.

Scenario

A client pays a deposit for a tour around USA. The agent inadvertently forgets to mention that the tour operator has clearly stated in the fare conditions that if there is a price increase before the full amount of the tour is paid, the client will be required to pay the difference in cost.

When the client sends the final cheque for payment of the tour he is advised by the agency that a further amount of $200 is required to secure the booking. Since making the original booking, the Australian dollar has devalued considerably compared to the US dollar. The client is upset and refuses to pay. He’s upset that the agent never advised of a price increase and also, had he known of this ‘booking condition’ when paying the deposit, he would have paid in full at the time of booking.

The agency bears the increased cost of the tour losing any chance of making a profit from this booking.

a.
Explain your understanding of the meaning of the following risks in relation to the scenario.

(i)
Product price increase

4 marks

(ii)
Fluctuations in exchange rates

(iii)
Terms and conditions

b.
(i) Identify five (5) adventure or sporting activities with at least two (2) associated risks for each one that customers should be made aware of when booking/participating in adventure touring products.

For example: An adventure or sporting activity would be scuba diving. Associated risks with participation are asphyxiation from improper operation of equipment; suffering from ‘the bends’ (so cannot fly within 24 hours of a dive); becoming separated (disorientated) from tour group resulting in panic; possible drowning; possibility of being attacked by a sea creature.

15 marks

Adventure or sporting activity

Associated risks with activities

(ii) Explain briefly the implications to a travel consultant of failing to correctly advise clients and customers of risks?

3 marks

(iii) As well as discussing risks associated with some activities, it is important to make customers aware of additional risks due to their age or personal physical limitations (eg. disabilities), or company licensing requirements. Give four (4) examples of a particular type of adventure, sporting activity or tour with at least two (2) special limitations for participation for each one.

For example: Scuba diving. Special limitations can be that the customer must have current qualifications from a certified scuba diving course; may not present any major pre-existing medical conditions that may affect their performance, such as asthma; some companies stipulate a certain age range for participation.

12 marks

Adventure, sporting activity or tour

Additional risks due to limitations and special licensing requirements

(iv) There are many reasons why an offered product (tour, flight or package holiday) purchased by a client may suddenly be cancelled. Identify and explain two (2) reasons why this could occur.
