Pheromones: The truth behind the myths

GENERAL PURPOSE: To inform

SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To inform my audience about pheromones and it’s direct

developmental effect on hormone levels or behavioral change.

CENTRAL IDEA: To inform the class on pheromones, I will cover its discovery,

effects, and various types.

Introduction

Have you ever been attracted to someone you normally wouldn’t be attracted to? If your answer to this question is yes then you’ve experienced the power of pheromones. I will cover the discovery of pheromones as well as its effects, and various types.

I. What is a Pheromone & how was it discovered?

A. Pheromones are a chemical signal that triggers a natural response in another member

of the same species.

B. The term “pheromone” was introduced by Peter Karlson & Martin Luscher in 1959.

C. The word pheromone comes from the greek word pherein which means to transport

& hormone which means to stimulate.

D. In 1986 Dr. Winfred Cutler, a biologist & behavioral endocrinologist, co discovered

pheromones in our underarms. She & her team of researchers found that once any

overbearing underarm sweat was removed, what remained were the odorless

materials containing the pheromones.

II. The effects of Pheromones

A. Pheromones in your body scent play a large role in mate attraction.

III. There are many types of pheromones. Each used for different things.

A. Primer Pheromones

B. Releaser Pheromones

C. Information Pheromones

Conclusion

So now that you have been informed on the discovery, effects, & various types of pheromones; you won’t be surprised when you find someone who’s totally not your type attractive. The next time you find someone attractive that you normally wouldn’t. Thank your pheromones; they are contributing greatly to your interests.
