Chekhov insisted that his plays were comedies, Stanislavski often treated them more like serious drama. Look for the comedy – often through understatement and character neglect towards their actual situation. This play is often defined as a tragicomedy, so look for those elements. Also look for
subtext; that is, characters will often talk about everything EXCEPT what they should really be talking about. Mechanically, Chekhov tends to use a lot of pet-names and diminutives of character names in the dialogue
