Tasks:

Media Log:

Using the media diary template (Click here to download Download Click here to download), list your interactions with media over the course of 72 hours. For each piece of media, name:

The date

Time of day you consumed a particular media

Duration of time you spent using that media. If you, for example, check the same website several times throughout the day, record it in total amount of time rather than individual instances.

Content of the media (e.g., music, sitcom, reality television show, etc.)

Medium or device that you used to access the content (e.g., television, radio, internet via smartphone or computer, etc.)

Fellow audience members if you’re not alone, such as roommates, friends, family, etc.

Scheduling of the encounter – was it a media interaction you planned to have or one that occurred randomly? For example, you might plan to watch Love is Blind on Netflix alone after class, but randomly hear see ESPN Sportscenter while out at a bar with friends.

Describe the media interaction in very brief terms (you can describe it more in full in your essay)

Analysis:

After recording your media observations, write an analysis paper with the following sections:

Summarize the information documented in your time log, recalling the experience with as much accuracy as possible.

Identify and evaluate the media technologies you used including the interfaces, platforms, or sources of media content.

Interpret the affective experience of your media usage–was it purposeful or playful? Explain your experiences of mood, time management, physical well-being, or interpersonal interactions related to the different mediums and how you engaged it.

Identify at least two sources from readings or media assigned in this course and demonstrate how these sources explain your media usage.

Assess how your media usage illustrates the relationship between media and the social world. Choose at least one academic or journalistic reference not assigned in the course content to support your argument (Click here to learn how to choose a source Links to an external site.).
