PROJECT MANAGEMENT MG2130
Introduction
This document describes the coursework assessment for MG2130. There are two inter-related
elements of equal importance, which are integrated such that the individual element draws
heavily on the group work element. The purpose of this coursework is to develop skills in tying
together theory and practice so that you gain valuable insight into the demands of project
management as a realistic activity. The group work allows a group to use project management
tools and techniques to gain experience in tackling complex multi-faceted problems that require
a multi-disciplinary approach, i.e. situations in which teams of members with diverse skills are
able to work together to achieve common goals. Such competencies, insights, personable skills
and the general project management experience gained are attributes much sought after by
employers.
Learning outcomes
Whatever module or programme of study you are undertaking at Brunel University, there are
learning outcomes that you must achieve in order to be awarded the necessary credits that
comprise the module and programme of study. The learning outcomes you must demonstrate for
this module are:
1. to demonstrate understanding of problems, principles and methods and apply appropriate
1. techniques to planning, co-ordination and control activity.
2. to reflect and discuss on the skills relevant to project-related roles
3. to demonstrate understanding of the technical analysis, systems and staffing aspects of
4. project-based programmes.
5. to discuss the relations between project management and performance imperatives including:
6. quality, productivity, efficiency, information processing and scheduling.
Coursework
The coursework comprises two elements: 1) groupwork and 2) individual essay. We have found
that failure to take an active part in the groupwork correlates with poor performance in the
individual essay. It is advisable that you set about forming groups as early as possible as you are advised to identify fellow team members quickly so as to begin the planning stages of the task
without delay.
Element Two: Individual Essay (60%)
Working individually you are required to produce an essay of 1000 words in which you address
the issue of the interplay between theory and practice of Project Management. The essay must
demonstrate that you have successfully reflected on your experiences in element one and are able
to relate your personal observations to published theory. The focus of the analysis should be on
the human aspects of teamwork (rather than the technical aspects) and it should draw justifiable
conclusions about the accuracy and relevance of the chosen theories
Reflection on Online and Social Media
You should reflect on your personal experiences in using the Blackboard Learn discussion and
chat room facilities to work with the group during element one. Discuss your reasons for
accessing the discussion boards, what information you were seeking, how satisfied you were
with the information found, your motivation to make your own postings, how well the group
worked through the virtual channels, and how it affected the group’s relationships, dynamics and
overall performance. The markers for element two are interested in your ability to explain the
reasons for your actual contribution record using published theory to illustrate and justify.
Refer to at least two published theories (related to online group work or collaboration) that help
to explain your own conclusions and experiences. This section should be up to 500 words and
referenced using the Harvard method.
