Competency Statement: Develop an understanding of the opportunities to create value through supplier relationship
management (SRM).
Competency Overview/Description:
The objective of this competency is to distinguish how supplier relationship management (SRM) creates value. This competency
introduces students to the purpose of SRM and the qualification of suppliers. Materials and interactive activities will move the
student from theory to the practical application of concepts as they create a qualification plan of their own.
Competency Objectives:
1. Develop new supplier qualification plans and reports to assure components, materials, and suppliers meet specified
requirements (regulatory, safety, reliability, and quality).
2. Develop an understanding of the processes needed for timely availability of resources and to enhance quality through SRM
for domestic and international.
3. Develop an understanding of customer communication/customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain mapping,
quality systems, logistic systems, financial analysis, methods of requirements gathering, and supplier evaluation measures.

Purpose of This Assessment
In this summative assessment you will develop a scenario to hire a new supplier for a business. You then will write a qualification
plan based on the scenario.

Step ONE: Conduct Research

Analyze resources and materials in the competency—as well as outside research related to SRM and CRM— to help you
outline a qualification plan. Within your qualification plan you must have three to five main points that are supported by three to
five cited references.
Be sure to consider the following questions in your research of developing your qualification plan:

○ What is SRM, and what benefit does it bring to the business and your qualification plan? How does it benefit the
business and its return on investment (ROI)? How does it fit into your company’s managerial and leadership
structure?
● Supplier Qualifications and Qualifying Suppliers
○ What criteria will be used to qualify suppliers? What process will be used to rate and rank suppliers? What
process will be used for final qualification of the supplier?
● The Qualification Plan
○ How do you plan to evaluate the supplier’s performance and rating as it relates to the qualification plan? How do
you plan to measure your progress (success)?

○ What is CRM as it relates to your business? Why is it important to your company’s approach to SRM and

Step TWO: Describe Your Scenario
You are hiring a new supplier for a business. Describe a scenario that will provide enough context to develop a new supplier
qualification plan to ensure that components, materials, and suppliers meet specified requirements (e.g. regulatory, safety, reliability,
and quality). Within your scenario’s outline or description, you must include the following information:

Consider these details as you write your qualification plan:
• Introduction – Clearly explain the purpose of your plan.
o Provides an overview of the purpose and benefits of SRM, Supplier Qualification Planning, CRM, and global issues.
• Qualification Plan (body) – Thoroughly explain the details of your qualification plan.
o Your plan has a clear, logical flow and thought process.
o The plan is based upon SRM best practices.
o There is a formal structure that the reader can follow, understand, and draw conclusions from information
presented.
o The plan is feasible, well laid out, and easy to implement.
o There are three to five main points that are supported by references from three to five cited resources.
o The analyses and plan connect to the introduction, the conclusion, and the “heart” of your paper and presentation.
• Conclusion – Summarize the details of your plan
o The conclusion is a clear, concise recap of the plan.
o The conclusion does not bring in any new ideas.
o If needed, there is a call to action in the conclusion.
o Information is provided on how the plan will be implemented.
o Information on next steps within your company to move this forward is provided.

Step FIVE: Write Your Qualification Plan
Use your research and the work you have completed in this competency to write your qualification plan. Your qualification plan must
contain an introduction, qualification plan (body), and conclusion. You must have three to five main points that are supported by
references from three to five cited resources. You will be graded on organization, grammar, punctuation, and APA. Refer to the rubric
for detailed descriptions of the criteria on which you will be evaluated.
Step SIX: Create Your PowerPoint Presentation
Using your qualification plan, develop a PowerPoint presentation that highlights the key points of your qualification plan. Your
presentation should follow the same organization of your plan—introduction, details of your qualification plan, and conclusion.
Once you develop the slides, add your voice to the presentation to explain the purpose of your plan in greater detail.
