    Part Two Write it Out
Now you’re going to write out everything you want to say to the person you’re interacting with, without any edit-
ing. This is for your eyes only. When you’re finished, take a moment to read it over and see if you can identify a
few key ideas, sentences, or phrases that really get to the heart of what you want to get across to this person,
and circle or underline them. Next, you’re going to boil these down to your ‘real message’ (taking out any reac-
tive language)—the thing you most want to get across or change.

    Real Message

    Part One The Situation
Think either of the situation you used in your Becoming Aware Snapshot, or of any other situation where you’ve
not yet been able to maintain your composure or express yourself in a clear and rational way while dealing with
a particular person. First, briefly write out the circumstances and what takes place during this interaction. Then
write down anything you think might be acting as a trigger for you—any words or behaviors that trigger you to
act in destructive or otherwise disempowering ways.
