Summer Assignment for Rising Grade 10 IB Middle Years Programme Students
Summer 2013

Dear IB 10 Student,

Happy Summer! As you know, all 10th grade students at our three IB high schools are IB Middle Years students. A world of ideas, experiences,
and challenges awaits you as you continue with the IB MYP. The IB Middle Years Programme 10 teaching team at Annapolis High School,
Meade High School, and Old Mill High School has prepared a summer assignment especially for you. The assignment will be collected the
first day of school for all students, August 27, 2013.

IB programs focus on building active, caring and compassionate communities of lifelong learners. In that spirit, parents are encouraged to join
their IB students in the summer enrichment activities leading up to the school year. Over the summer, extend your horizons by attending
concerts, museums, exhibits, seeing international films, and reading widely and deeply from fiction and non‐fiction. Check out the AACPS
reading lists on the website: http://www.aacps.org/html/studt/readlist.htm and those in your local libraries.

Summer Assignment:

All incoming 10th grade students will read a novel of their choosing over the summer. You will choose a novel that is international in nature
(either from another country or about another country). During your first week of school in August, you will be assigned an essay in your
English class. This essay will require you to analyze a character from the book you have read using the IB Learner Profile. The Learner Profile is
a distinctive set of attributes that will prepare you for high school as well as develop you into a life‐long learner; you will learn about these in
more detail throughout the upcoming year. Please take the time to read through the IB Learner Profile traits and descriptions on the next page.
As you read throughout the summer, if you use the attached chart to analyze a main character and bring the completed chart to English class on
the first day of school, you will be extremely well‐prepared to complete the essay that will be assigned. The completed chart will count as your
first homework grade in English class.

The IB learner profile

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common
humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

IB learners strive to be:

Inquirers They develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct
inquiry and research and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy
learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.

Knowledgeable They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance.
In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding
across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

Thinkers They exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively
to recognize and approach complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical
decisions.

Communicators They understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively
in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They
work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.

Principled They act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and
respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take
responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany
them.

Open-minded They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and
are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and
communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points
of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.

Caring They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of
others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive
difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

Risk-takers They approach unfamiliar situations and uncer taint y with courage and
forethought, and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas
and strategies. They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs.

Balanced They understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance
to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others.

Reflective They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. They
are able to assess and understand their strengths and limitations in order to
support their learning and personal development.
