The title of the article I have chosen to write about is “Home for a masterpiece; Art; Retiring City College man-around-campus leads effort to build center for Rivera mural.” This article is written by Jesse Hamlin, and was published by The San Francisco Chronicle. Its date of publication was May 21, 2012. The database that was used to find the article was LexisNexis Academic. To narrow the search I typed in Diego Rivera and found this article about his famous mural and what one man wanted to do to keep it in a proper place for centuries to come.

Will Maynez, a retiring physics lab manager at San Francisco City College has put together a plan to build a very expensive home for Diego Rivera’s largest and arguably most acclaimed piece of artwork, The Pan American Unity mural. It is an immense 1,800 square feet and portrays historic figures like the Aztec Quetzalcoatl, Simon Bolivar, the Axis Power leaders Hitler and Mussolini, Abraham Lincoln, Henry Ford and people Rivera personally knew. Rivera created the mural to inspire and unite the people of America during the war against Hitler across seas. Maynez realized how important the mural was when he was given the task of photographing it. He joined a group familiar with the famous artists’ murals and joined forces with the college and Mexican Government. For years they have been working on creating a place for the enormous mural and even for other works of art. James Diaz, an architect of the city of San Francisco has already come up with a design for the center. Maynez is just about done but has yet to raise the money to build the mural’s home. The cost will come out to be about twenty million dollars. What does Maynez wish to accomplish by making such a place for an artwork he did not create or even meet the man who did? He wants young Hispanic people to see the mural and learn more about the cultures of their ancestors. He wants them to know that they were educated. To Maynez education is key, that is the message he wishes to send by building a center for the talented Rivera’s mural.

One of the reasons I chose this article is because Diego Rivera is one of my favorite artists. He created many artworks and his biggest one seems to be in great hands by a man wanting to take care of it for years to come. I also chose it because it is inspirational. Will Maynez is liked and supported by many. Everyone had something positive to say about him. His drive and dedication to build a center for the mural done by the famous artist is inspiring. He has been going at it for 15 years and has not yet given up
