Purpose of the Stock Report assignment
It is given to build your knowledge and awareness of the U.S. Stock Market, of which the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is the largest in the world. After having completed this project you are likely to get a new sense of what happens in general in the business world and how people make decisions to invest in the stock market. Think of this project as a simulated stock investment “game” where real money is NOT involved, but real research is, leading to a basic understanding of the U.S. stock market.
NOTE: Correct grammar and spelling will count in this formal business report. As this is a college level business course, students are expected to have basic knowledge of grammar and spelling of common words; see the Grading Criteria below for how these will be graded. Consult dictionary.com whenever necessary; proofread work very carefully, work with a Business Tutor if needed. Open the link below to contact the Business Tutor Office.

STOCK REPORT ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES
PART 1
You have $100,000 to invest in stocks
Select THREE (3) U.S. companies to invest your money in any amount you wish. Your companies must be listed in the New York Stock Exchange–no private companies.
Use the Web sites I have listed below for some general information. Then do some thorough research to select your three companies.
You can use the following Website to familiarize yourself with stock market information:
http://finance.yahoo.com/
Using the above site, type in a company’s name in the “Get Quote” box on the top left. You’ll then get the ticker symbol (WMT for Walmart, etc.) for the company and be taken to its current stock status. Most of the information that you need for this report can be found in the list of things on the side banner under Summary, Charts, etc.Try to familiarize yourself with this site.
Try to base your selections of the three companies on the following information: a) companies’ profits, revenues, etc. b) Earning Per Share EPS, c) their dividends – see ticker table on the financial pages of Wall St. Journal or any of the sites I’ve given you below, d) the hi’s and low’s— ticker table, e) the companies’ abilities to meet their social responsibilities, f) their effective greening strategies (going green), etc. You must clearly state the reasons for your company selections in the beginning of your report.
The selection of your companies should not be based on emotion, but on objective evaluation of your research. Remember, you are looking for a company that has been profitable at least one quarter during the last twelve months.
BUY ONLY STOCKS, NOT CRYPTO CURRENCY, OR ANYTHING ELSE. THE ENTIRE $100,000 MUST BE SPENT ON YOUR STOCK INVESTMENTS ONLY.
PART 2
Get charts to show each company’s growth over a certain period of time from the Web sites I’ve already given you, and/or check out the companies individual Web sites.
Further emphasis on what to discuss clearly on your report:
What is the purchase price per share when you buy?
What is the total number of shares for each company that you bought?
What is your total investment for each company?
What is the dividend amount and yield based on purchase price, if the stock is offering any dividend?
Use the appropriate charts from the Internet to show how the stock has been doing over a period of time. Make sure to put the URL source at the bottom of every chartor material you use from the Internet as well as in your Work Cited or Reference pageat the end of the report. Try to use a hyperlink instead of the actual url such as http://…etc.

GRADING CRITERIA
(Check out how to write a proper paragraph in various YouTube videos or other Internet sources.)
Three clear LINE charts (progression over a period of time)–not bar charts, not tables— one for each company on separate chart page following the discussion of the company—not before it, are shown with titles and sources from where charts were obtained. 15
No writing/no text on chart page; show only chart on a FULL PAGE—one chart per page with proper title above chart and source below chart. Make sure the chart fills up the whole page, and not placed in a corner of the page somewhere as a tiny visual. 15
CLOSING paragraph of ONE to TWO clear, concise sentences, discussing your final analysis of this project: did you learn something from it, have you changed your mind about any of your companies, or any forward-looking statement. 10
WORK CITED page should have no information except for the list of sources used; MLA format should be used. This page should be titled: WORK CITED, not Bibliography which applies to books, or References. At least three sources should be used for research on your companies. 10
Open the following link:
MLA format for Work Citations
FORMAT 50
PAGES NUMBERED, starting with the report page—NOT THE TITLE PAGE, and ending with the Work Cited page; following mla.gov format. 20
Leave a blank line space between paragraphs, single space (word-wrap) within paragraphs. 10
One to two blank line spaces below headings. 10
Posted in Canvas as either PDF, or .docx, or .doc file only.
PROPER MARGINS all around, use the MS Word default margin or at least 1″ all around. 10
DO NOT USE .TXT FILE AS IT DOES NOT WORK WITH CANVAS AND YOUR REPORT WILL SHOW UP OUT OF ORDER.
MECHANICS/Grammar and Spelling six errors or more = -10
Proofread your work carefully before posting. Meet with a Business Tutor via Zoom, etc. if required.
NOTE: DO NOT COPY AND PASTE MATERIAL FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES as TurnItIn will show the similarity percentage as plagiarized work.Write using your own words; paraphrase material you find on the Internet. Plagiarism is a serious offense for which a student can be expelled from the college; see Academic Dishonesty Conduct in Student Conduct Article 4400, AR 4411 Code of Academic Conduct. If TurnItIn shows over 30 percent similarity (copied from other sources–not your own words), 20 percent of the total grade will be deducted. Example:If you earned 160/200 which is a B, this becomes 160-20% = 128/200 = D
Strive for a 0 percent similarity on Canvas TurnItIn score. You can revise your work and re-post it till before the final due date and time.
AS IN ALL WRITING ASSIGNMENTS IN THIS COURSE, IF YOUR WORK DOES NOT SHOW UP IN GRADEBOOK, CANVAS WILL REPORT IT AS “MISSING”; THEREFORE, A ZERO GRADE WILL BE GIVEN FOR IT.

Whichever companies you choose, be aware of any negative publicity they may have received recently in the media as that would greatly alter the price of their stocks.
There are a whole lot of YouTube videos that you may want to look through to learn about stock investments.

Page 1 of Report – introduce your report, talk about the purpose of the report, which three companies you selected and why, how much are you investing in each company, etc.
Page 2 begin with a title on top which should be your first company, example: Walmart. Then say somethings about the company, its products, which countries if multinational, its marketing strategy, its EPS (earning per share)–easily available in yahoo.finance–the company’s market share, any significant news about the company in the last three years, etc. Follow the directions given for this assignment. Finally talk about why you selected this company.
Page 3 copy and paste a full length chart of the company’s stock. Make it Landscape format if you know how to do it, it’s a Word operation; otherwise, leave it as portrait. Make sure to have the source of the chart (use MLA format for this) at the bottom of the chart. As explained before, if you go into
www.yahoo.finance
(only as an example) and find the chart for your company, you can then manipulate the time line by simply clicking on the 5D 6M etc. directly above the chart to see how the stock has been performing.
Page 4 begin with the title of your second company and follow the same pattern as mentioned above.
Page 5 should be the chart for this company’s stock, follow as above.
Page 6 begin with the title of your third and final company and just follow the same pattern as above.
Page 7 copy and paste the stock chart for this company with the same type of information as above.
Page 8 write your conclusions. How did you do in each of your investments? Did you gain or lose money, how much, why do you think that happened (why did the stock go down or up?)—do some reading on the Internet to check on what affected your companies. The last paragraph on this page should be your closing comment on what it was like to work on this project, what new things did you learn, etc.
Page 9 should be your Work Cited page, following the MLA format, list the sources you looked at, even if you didn’t use the sources in your report.
Page 10 if you have pictures of products to include from each company, this is where you can put them—all on one page or separate pages, but note that this page is not considered a part of the report; therefore, it should be page numbered with the letter i, ii, etc. but in small case, not in capital, and the title of these pages should be APPENDIX I, APPENDIX II, etc. with capital I.
Note: only black ink should be used for your writing as that’s the standard professional ink color for business reports. Charts and other things can be in the colors they appear when you copy and paste from external sources.
