To protect everyone in the virtual classroom from the potentially devastating effects of computer viruses, it is essential that each participant has and uses an up-to-date antivirus program or regularly scans for viruses using a web-based program, such as

http://housecall.antivirus.com

. This is a good (free) site for a drive/disk scan.

Methodology:

Emphasis in this course will be on text readings and resources, active participation in the discussion forum, text-based quizzes, and the final project.

Remember, to succeed in this course, regular participation is a must.

Evaluation:

This is a seven-week course with an “Overview & Learning Outcomes” agenda for each week. Each week also includes a “Forums & Assignments” folder, which includes a link to the weekly forum and the weekly quiz. The folder is located in each week’s Weekly Materials folder.

Discussion Forum: You are scored separately on your response to the weekly Topic Response and your participation in the weekly forum based on the postings of your classmates. There is a separate scoring rubric for each, which is detailed in the ‘Response to Posting’ worksheet and ‘Response to Topic Response’ worksheet in the “Discussion Forum Scoring Rubric.xls”. The scoring rubric file is located in each week’s “Forums & Assignments” folder. APA format is required including proper intext citations and a list of references. NOTE: Sources used in answering the Topic Question should come from peer-reviewed journals. Your textbook should be cited when appropriate. This means no tweets, blogs, wikis, CNN.com, etc. should be used as resources, unless otherwise noted.

Homework: Weekly homework problems are assigned and can be accessed through the “ebook & MyLab” link in Blackboard. The homework problems are designed to help you apply what you have learned in each of the chapters. There are several valuable learning aids within the ebook. – take advantage of them! Your homework scores will be given in MyStatLab, but because MyStatLab is outside of the Blackboard environment, your homework scores will not be imported in Blackboard until the end of week 4 and the end of the week 7.

Quizzes: Weekly quizzes are designed to test your knowledge of the material covered in the readings. The majority of quiz questions are multiple choice. Quizzes are located in Blackboard under Weekly Materials, Week x, Week x: Forums & Assignments”. NOTE: Graded quizzes are NOT located in MyStatLab. There are practice quizzes/tests in MyStatLab, but those are not graded.

Final Project: The final project is a 5-page written report where you will design your own study, but will NOT have to collect data. The final project description and rubric which outline all of the requirements, and how the final project will be scored will be available at the start of week 6 and are located under “Weekly Materials, Week 6, Week Six: Forums & Assignments” folder.

It is in your best interest to carefully review the assignment rubrics prior to beginning your assignments.

Grades will depend upon students’ ability to:

1. Follow the learning outcomes and assignments,

2. Apply and discuss the statistical concepts you are learning in the discussion forum and through weekly quizzes,

3. Develop and submit the appropriate assignments on time, and

4. Provide regular, meaningful, and substantive participation.

According to University policy, in order to successfully complete this course, a student must satisfactorily complete the final project. If the student does not complete the final project, he or she will receive an F in the course.

All course due dates are by MIDNIGHT, EASTERN STANDARD TIME, regardless of one’s own time zone; please keep this in mind and plan accordingly.

Back-up Plan:

The familiar excuse “my computer crashed or my computer doesn’t work” will not be accepted as an excuse for not completing assignments. Everyone MUST have a back-up plan. This happens every term, and every term a student is very unhappy so, please determine an alternate computer prior to having computer issues.

Student performance will be measured as explained above and in the various rubrics posted in the Instructional Materials section of each week’s Weekly Materials folder.

Extra Credit:

In keeping with university policy, no extra credit will be allowed in this course.

There is a total of 1,000 points possible in this course.

Every attempt will be made to post grades within three days of the due dates. Participation grades will be posted no more than three days after the end of each week.

Each week the assignment grades (except homework scores) will be posted within the Blackboard Gradebook. To access the feedback, simply click on the weekly assignment grade and a page containing feedback will appear in the Blackboard Gradebook.

Late Policy:

This is only a seven-week class, and timeliness is extremely important. Do not fall behind as it will be extremely difficult to catch up – most students never do. All course due dates are by MIDNIGHT, EASTERN STANDARD TIME, regardless of where one lives, all assignments are due in EST; please keep this in mind and plan accordingly.

Late work, including quizzes and homework, will be penalized 5% of the points available for each day it is late, up to five days.
After 5 days the assignment will not be accepted and a zero grade will be recorded.
(Ex: 1 day late 5% off score, 2 days late 10% off total score, 3 days late 15 % off total score, 4 days late 20% off total score, 5 days late 25% off total score, 6 days late 0.)

The late policy DOES NOT APPLY to the discussion forum participation points
. To receive participation points, students must post responses in the same week as the questions were answered. No Exceptions.

The late policy DOES NOT APPLY to THE FINAL PROJECT
. Because final grades must be submitted at the completion of the semester, NO LATE FINAL PROJECTS will be accepted. Please keep this in mind and plan ahead. Turning in the final paper late will result in a zero. No exceptions.

If there is an extenuating circumstance that prevents one from submitting an assignment, please contact the professor immediately. Computer issues DO NOT COUNT. As an online student, you are required to have a computer back-up plan; this may be in the form of a family member’s, friend’s, or local library’s computer. Please arrange your back-up plan prior to the start of this course. Computer issues are not an excuse for late work.

From time to time, students have problems with Blackboard. If there is a University-wide Blackboard issue, you will be notified via email. Unless you receive an email notifying you of a Blackboard problem, your assignment is expected to be turned in on time. This means that if you are having trouble with Blackboard, you should contact tech support and work out the problem. Always have a back-up plan for emergencies; thus ensuring the assignment will be turned in on time.
