STP226 Group Problems – Chapters 2, 3 & 4
1. Using data from Problem 3.187 in Chapter 3, do the following.
a.
Using Statcrunch, construct the histogram. Provide a copy of the histogram by copying from Statcrunch or making a sketch of it.
Does the histogram appear to represent a symmetrical population distribution?
b. Using Statcrunch find: Mean, Median, Range, Standard deviation, Variance, 5-number summary (p.129), and IQR.
c. Use Chebyshev’s rule (pp 117-118) to find the limits that contain at least 75% of the observations. Show all calculations.
d. Calculate the upper and lower limits (p.130) to check for potential outliers. Identify any potential outliers. Show all calculations.
e. Construct boxplot of this data. Provide a copy of the boxplot by copying from Statcrunch or making a sketch of it.
2. When one die is rolled, the following six outcomes are possible.
A = event the # of dots is odd.
B = event the # of dots is at least 4.
C = event the # of dots is 2.
a) Are events A and B mutually exclusive? Explain your answer
b) Are events B and C mutually exclusive? Explain your answer.
2.(Cont’d)
c) Find P(B or C)
3. Given P(A) = 0.471, P(B) = 0.187, and P(A & B) = 0.097. Do the following and show numbers to explain your answers.
a) Are the events A and B independent?
b) Are the events A and B mutually exclusive?
4. See next page for data and questions
