During the Cold War, the United States developed and carried out a policy of Containment, which

stated that the United States would act against a government with the intention of spreading a non-democratic government into other nations. The Soviet war in Afghanistan lasted from

1979

to

1989

the fight was between Soviet-led Afghan forces against the muja hideen. they received billions of dollars from the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and other countries. On July 3rd, 1979 President Jimmy Carter signed the first directive covert financial aid to the people opposing of the Pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. The United States helped mujahideen to help defeat the soviet-led Afghanistan forces; which shows the attempts made to ensure the policy was kept true.

first support

“America put a ban on the export of grain to Russia, ended the SALT talks taking place then and boycotted the Olympic Games due to be held in Moscow in 1980. Other than that, America did nothing. Why ? They knew that Russia had got itself into their own Vietnam and it also provided American Intelligence with an opportunity to acquire any new Russian military hardware that could be used in Afghanistan. Mujhadeen fighters were given access to American surface-to-air missiles – though not through direct sales by America.”

America is practicing a tactic know as boycotts and economic sanctions, by not giving something that Russia needs it helps with negotiations that can come when discussing the invasion of Afghanistan. This tactic shows how the united states is practicing containment because it shows that they aren’t afraid to help a country out that might be under attack from a communist government, no matter who the country is that needs help or the country that is attacking.

Support 2

“The Soviet invasion, which sparked Afghan resistance, intially involved an estimated 30,000 troops, a force that ultimately grew to 100,000. The mujahidin were supported by aid from the United States, China, and Saudi Arabia, channeled through Pakistan, and from Iran. Although the USSR had superior weapons and complete air control, the rebels successfully eluded them. The conflict largely settled into a stalemate, with Soviet and government forces controlling the urban areas, and the Afghan guerrillas operating fairly freely in mountainous rural regions. As the war progressed, the rebels improved their organization and tactics and began using imported and captured weapons, including U.S. antiaircraft missiles, to neutralize the technological advantages of the USSR.”

Providing financial aid to the Mujahidin is a tactic the United States adopt’s, we basically are letting someone else fight the war for us by providing them with resources to defeat the enemy. The enemy at the time was communists, letting the mujahidin fight the soviet- afghanistans for us had many benefits, not only did we save american lives we also got intelligence against the soviets on their technology and other information about them. Doing this can either make us look very powerful or very weak, but either way it makes us help contain communism from spreading to other countries.
