Describe return on investmentReturn on investment (ROI) is a performance metric used to assess an investment’s effectiveness or profitability or to compare the effectiveness of several investments. ROI aims to quantify the amount of return on a specific investment in relation to the cost of the investment (Masters et al, 2017).Costs associated with VTE treatment can be leveraged in demonstrating the potential economic benefit of prevention efforts. Titi et al. (2021) state that approximately 548,000 adult hospital patients per year are diagnosed with VTE per year. VTE is identified as an economic burden of $1.5 billion – $10 billion in direct cost and combining direct and indirect costs in the United States range from $9.8 – $52 billion annually (Mahan et al., as cited in Casciano et al., 2015). Casciano et al. (2015) state that the total economic burden, considering cost due to VTE complication, maybe at a much greater level than recorded. Approximately 18% of patients who had a VTE are readmitted within 30 days of discharge at a cost of $10,000 per patient, and between 10% to 30% of acute VTE survivors develop recurrent VTE within 5 years, with a peak after discontinuing treatment (Henke et al, 2020). Patients developing VTE tend to have multiple comorbidities that contribute to a variety of healthcare use. Furthermore, incremental costs of hospital-related VTE are significantly beyond those attributed to coexisting health conditions (Titi et al., 2021; Grosse, 2016). Cost estimates commonly exclude subsequent VTE-related morbidity. In the United States alone, the occurrence of VTE affects an average of 900,000 patients with an estimated 300,000 deaths per year. Additional evidence indicates the impact of VTE impacts 300,000 – 900,000 patients’ lives with mortality of 100,000 – 300,000 deaths annually if untreated (Maynard, 2016; Streiff et al., 2014). The frequency of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) is greater with a longer inpatient hospital length of stay and an increased rate (10-15%) of fatality (Maynard, 2016).
