Internet Addiction
For many people, the Internet is an essential part of modern life. It is a great source for information and entertainment and it allows people to communicate whenever they want and whatever they prefer by using Email, blogs, or social networks and it is an important require ment for a lot jobs. But a lot of people don’t know how to use it perfectly, which causes an illness called Internet addiction. Because of scientists, descriptions of Internet addiction as a” non chemical addiction”, and despite the old reports about the fact of extreme use of the Internet since the 1970s, the problem of Internet addiction did not appear in the medical or psychological fields until the early 1990’s (Chakraborty, Basu, Vijaya Kumar , 2010). Therefore, Internet addiction is not a defined illness category in the “10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases” (ICD10) and the 4th edition of the” Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders “(DSMIV). (Chakraborty, Basu, Vijaya Kumar, 2010).Using the Internet can become a problem when it makes people lose track of time, affects their relationships, work, or school or any other important things and they keep repeating it despite the consequences.
In December 3,2009 , a study that included 1,618 student between 13 to 18 years old, found that about 10% of the students are addicted to the Internet and feel nervous when they are not connected to the Internet (as cited in Vanessa, 2009).
Internet addiction is a real danger that many people ignore. It has obvious symptoms, consequences, causes, and its solutions and cures are very simple, which I will discuss in this paper. In researching Internet Addiction, I have focused on the following questions regarding the topic :
What is Internet Addiction?
What are the effects?
What are the causes of Internet Addiction?
What are the treatments?
What is Internet Addiction?
Scientists describe Internet addiction as a desire to control confusion, which is not related to the usage of drugs or alcohol or any external effects and is very similar to pathological gambling. Internet users can enjoy features of the Internet that permit them to meet, socialize, and exchange concepts in chat rooms, community network websites, or famous international games. Exploring an important topic and blogging is another way that people use to spend hours and hours on the Internet. The same as any other addiction, people suffering from this issue use their imagination to communicate with people and make relationships, as a substitute for the real life connection which they can’t achieve normally (I I A R, n.d).
Various actions might be signs of the Internet addiction. For example, stop taking care of the priorities such as homework, family, work, and tending to have a mixed feeling of happiness and guilt and feeling more comfortable with online friends, or having an inability to stop playing online games, or gambling, even with the real consequences, is an obvious sign of Internet addiction. People who have this issue are always loosing track of time, lacking responsibilities, spending time with the Internet, thinking about the old online activities or observing the new online offers and activities. Also, increasing the time of using the Internet in order to achieve intrinsic aims such as self satisfaction is sign. Feelings of impatience, sulkiness, irritableness when trying to cease using the Internet; or staying online more than the actual need, are signs of Internet addictions. Other Signs of Internet addiction are losing or a possible danger of losing a deep relationship, job, or educational chances because of using the Internet, lying to the parents, doctors, friends and teachers in order to hide the problem of the Internet addiction or to increase the time of the Internet usage. Moreover, forgetting problems, external stresses, and obligations and changes in mood by using the Internet, are signs that are mentioned by a lot of Internet addicts (I I A R, n.d).
What are the effects?
Internet addiction has enormous general, social, and sexual effects and consequences on people who are suffering from this issue.
Socially, Internet addiction reflects a great threat in to the addict’s health, relationships, and social well being and it also causes failure to communicate with the real world by enforcing the addict to stay away from the daily social activities and increase the disability to communicate with the real world. So the addict becomes more likely to communicate and represent himself in the Internet world more than the real life. Essentially, Internet addiction can smash the ability to keep a worthy social life and it has real social effects (Breedon, n.d ).
Sexually, the promoters of the Internet censorship believe that experiencing the kind of obvious materials available on the Internet can directly lead to a deceiving view of real sexual life and to sex addiction. Sex addiction can be defined as an uncontrollable sexual action that makes negative legal, emotional, and even physical effects and it is considered a famous psychological disorder stemming from the Internet addiction (Breedon, n.d).
Generally, Internet Addiction causes bad grades in school or not focusing at work. Also, i can create a desire to commit suicide as a result of watching sadness, angriness, and violence views. Loosing or giving important details such as banking information which causes a lot of problems can also be a result of addiction to the Internet (Breedon, n.d.).
What are the causes ?
The main reason of Internet addiction is unknown until now, but many reasons are considered a cause of Internet addiction, and they are being studied by experts. Depression is one of the Internet addiction causes. People may depend on the Internet to temporarily forget their stress and problems. Also, the Internet is the main and the hugest information source, so people are motivated by knowledge and may become addicts to the Internet as an information source. Often, people become addicts to dating sites and chat rooms to meet other people in order to get rid of loneliness. Also, people who are trying to forget their real world may become addicted to the Internet’s imaginary world, which makes them more outgoing. Being addicted to something else makes the person in danger of being addicted to other activities such as using the Internet. Also, mental disorders or isolation might direct people to do something called “self – medicate” by using the Internet in the same way that alcohol and drug addicts use to deal with their disorders (Balle, n.d).
Depending on the existence of the factors and causes of the addiction, there are many types of people who are suffering from Internet addiction. First of all, any other addiction can lead people to be addicted to the Internet, so people who are addicted to drugs, sex, gambling or alcohol are always under the risk of Internet addiction. Also people who suffer from anxiety might use the Internet and check their emails to divert themselves from stress and doubts. Internet addicts might use the Internet as a treatment to flee from depression, but they do not realize that it directs them to worse things such as isolation and loneliness. The Internet makes teenagers feel happier because they can feel more comfortable with Internet friends more than real life friends. People who were very socially active and became very reclusive usually cover their social lack by addiction to the Internet. People who use the Internet as a stress reliever might have very negative effects and their stress level will increase as much as their Internet usage (Saisan, Smith, Robinson, Segal, 2010).
What are the treatments?
People can treat themselves against Internet addiction by following several steps. But the heavy usage of the Internet during work might be an encouragement for people to get used to the treated behavior again. Therefore, people should get external help to support their effort. Also, identify the problems that might encourage the behavior of using and being addicted to the Internet. For example, stress can direct people to use and become addicted to the Internet as a way to escape from real life. In some ways, using the Internet might remind people who had problems with alcohol or drugs of the old addiction issues. In short, problems that help people to remain addicted to the Internet have to be identified in order to get the use of the Internet under control. Building skills in treating stress or anger and social problems is an important step to get rid of addiction to the Internet because people who are suffering from these issues usually use the Internet as a temporary reliever for their daily obstacles. Addiction to the Internet might be a result of poor or few ties with society. Therefore, there is a strong relationship between the number of real life relationships and using the Internet for social communication purposes. People might make a strong social life in order to get rid of the continuous usage of the Internet. They also could choose a specific time every week to spend with friends and family. Furthermore, collectivist activities such as sports teams, educational classes, and book reading are a good choice for people who are shy because it helps them to communicate with others and create friendships (Saisan, Smith, Robinson, Segal, 2010).
Adjusting the usage of the Internet is an excellent way to start a good treatment. People could do that by specifying the usage of the Internet for non essential purposes, if there is a specific time that the usage of Internet becomes more, or if there are any causes that increase the time of using Internet more than the planned amount. Also, make a daily plan that specifies the Internet usage time, or set a timer, commit to turning the computer off at a specific time every day, or use the Internet for a limited time as a reward of completing priority things such as homework or laundry. Likewise, do healthy activities instead of using the Internet. Since refusing the Internet using habit is a hard thing to do, having a substitute plan such as inviting friends over, taking classes, going to lunch with friends is a worthy way to break the habit of using the Internet. Moreover, figure out the missing obligations and diminish the Internet time to take care of it, use the Internet for reasonable aims and take 5 minutes break every hour while using the Internet to do other activity, limit the Internet usage time, and break the habit of spending hours on the Internet, doing things which are not available online such as go to book stores, music stores, museums, theaters, and read poetry and novels (Saisan, Smith, Robinson, and Segal,2010).
On the other hand,to change factors that surround Internet addiction, Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a treatment that provides a great effect in controlling Internet use. It also directs people to healthier ways to deal with real life obstacles. Marriage counseling is a good choice for people who are married and affected by online usage to change these issues. It also helps partners to reconnect if they have been using the Internet for social needs (Saisan, Smith, Robinson, and Segal,2010).
Internet addiction is a new illness. Therefore, it’s not easy to find a real life supporter devoted to this problem such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Gamblers Anonymous. People who have problems with Internet, alcohol, gambling or sex can get into these groups to get help with these issues. Some of these groups are available online, but people mostly use these online groups cautiously. Despite the fact that the online groups are very useful, it’s very important to have a group support in order to earn the best benefit (Saisan, Smith, Robinson; and Segal,2010).
People also can help each other by planning Internet use and being an excellent model, explain the issue to people who are suffering from this issue, get them in interests which are not related to the Internet, talk with them about your worries about their habits, encourage them to change if they are suffering from this problem, and encourage them to find an expert counseling. (Saisan, Smith, Robinson, and Segal,2010).
There are so many things that parents can do to help children and teens get rid of Internet addiction. For example, they could support other activities that children or teens are interested in and show them other activities such as sports or scouting. Also, they can manage Internet use by setting limits and by putting the computer in a common area that makes observing the child’s activity easier to do and discuss issues with the child and see if there a problem with your child that is causing him to stay online (Saisan, Smith, Robinson, and Segal,2010).
conclusion
The Internet is a great thing if people use it in a responsible way. If they do , the Internet could be a great place to communicate, make worthy relationships, or even begin romantic relationships, which are usually more worthy than the real life relationships.

Pit bulls; Dangerous or a Defender?
I have decided to do my research essay about pit bulls. Some people think that pit bulls are dangerous and shouldn’t be trusted but are they really as bad as some people think they are? Since the breed was recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) 114 years ago they have said it is the best “nanny dog” and the UKC also doesn’t recommend them as guard dogs because they are too nice to strangers. The reason I believe this is worth considering is because my friend has a pit bull and he is not allowed to take his dog to the dog park in Yakima because ‘pit bulls’ aren’t allowed there. I thought this was completely ridiculous since I know a few pit bulls and none of them are mean, so why is everyone freaking out about them? I will check their history, to find out if anything happened in the past that should make people afraid of them. Also, I will look at dog attack statistics from present times and see if there is a valid fear of pit bulls. This is a topic I believe affects everyone, even if they don’t personally own a pit bull your next door neighbor could own one or someone in your neighborhood.
