The Rapide name: is a reference to the

, Austria. The factory initially planned to build 2,000 per year, but relocated to England in 2012 after sales did not meet production targets.

Why did they build it: The car, called Bertone Jet 2+2, has been created for the

Geneva motor show

to celebrate both Aston’s centenary and 60 years of collaborations between Aston Martin and Bertone. The one-off creation also highlights Bertone Officina, the new high-end atelier department of the Italian company which caters for wealthy enthusiasts who want to design their own bespoke car.

Aston Martin Rapide Futures:Power comes from a 470bhp version of Aston’s 5.9-litre V12 taken from the current Rapide, rather than the more potent 550bhp version from the upcoming

Aston Martin Rapide Competitors:

Generally, every successful car has a lot of competitors. Therefore, some of the advantages of the Rapide compared to other exotic car competitors include: it has slightly more airbags (5 vs 3), gets slightly more from a tank of gas in the city (311 miles vs 268 miles), has an auxiliary audio input jack, has standard paddle shifters (standard vs not available) and has standard CD player (standard vs not available). However, on average it only has a naturally aspirated engine (none vs twin turbocharger), doesn’t have CD changer (not available vs standard) and lacks a subwoofer, hurting bass in music. There are many competitors for the Aston Martin such as the Porsche Panamera , Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S , Ferrari F12 and Mercedes E63 AMG. All of the previous cars has the same feature like the four doors and they considered in the same category. (6)

Technology Advanced: Industry-leading technology means a comprehensive range of Rapide S safety solutions. Seat belt engineering includes dual pre-tensioning and load limiting technology for all four passengers, in addition to eight airbags. A structure of advanced bonded aluminium effectively manages crash loads, as does a new front bumper beams and fixation design meeting EU1 Lower Leg Compliance legislation.

Engineered to Excel And Adapt: Rapide S is the first Rapide to include hi-tech Gen4 Adaptive Damping. Allowing the driver to choose between three modes; ‘Normal’ ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’, each delivering a unique driving experience. Controlled at the push of a real glass button, feedback is instant and the changes immediate, meaning Rapide S can move effortlessly from luxurious GT to assertive sporting performance. A four-door car adaptable for the track? It’s Rapide S.

Hybrid Aston Martin rapide: Aston Martin has revealed in the 30th of April 2013 the first details on a Hybrid Hydrogen-powered Rapide S that will be raced at the 41st ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring next month. The model will be based on the standard

four-door sedan

and will become the first zero CO2 emissions sports car to complete a race-pace lap at the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The model is powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 engine and can be run on pure gasoline, pure gaseous hydrogen or a combination of the two. In pure hydrogen mode, Aston Martin will race the Nordschleife while emitting just water.

The new Aston Martin Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S features a special Hybrid Hydrogen system that includes a hydrogen fuel rail, storage tanks and proprietary engine management system. The system includes four ultra-high-strength carbon-fiber tanks that can hold 7.7 pounds of hydrogen stored at a 350-bar pressure. Its official race debut will be made in the ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24 Hours race on May 19th and 20th where it will have to take on more than 150 other cars. (4)

To summarize: The Rapide remains a wonderful thing – fast, agile, responsive and supremely comfortable. The engine remains the car’s defining feature, creamy smooth when used gently and positively savage when unleashed. Despite the boosted power output the Rapide S still lacks the initial punch of turbocharged rivals, especially as the six-speed automatic gearbox it works with feels positively leisurely by modern standards. But once the engine does come on song – the blue touchpaper moment is probably around 4000rpm – it’s an awesome thing, with linear and seemingly unrelenting thrust plus a soundtrack that could reanimate the recently deceased. Other cars might quicker to respond or faster overall, but you can’t buy another four-door car that sounds better than this one.
