Medicine River uses a first person narration which is told by Will. Will tells the story in such a way that, despite the unpleasant circumstances, is still enjoyable to read and it even contains a good amount of humor. The story is in no way limited to ‘native’ audiences only, nor is the book limited to adults or children.

Medicine River captivates all audiences and maintains the audiences attention with sad circumstances, predictaments and emotional triumphs which create a deeper sensitivity in the hearts of its audience. Medicine River revolves around issues that lead readers to put themselves in others shoes and see from other perspectives and backgrounds (different culture life, family life etc.), while still incorporating humor.

Medicine River is a heartfelt story that portrays the ups and downs of life for one mixed-blood young native man of Black Foot descent, named Will. The story portrays how Will’s harships ultimately aid Will in his personal, emotional and spiritual development. Will’s dad, Bill, was absent from the family aside from letters his dad would send now and again – though Will’s mom would not allow him to read those letters; Will’s mom was constantly broken hearted and androcentrisitic – which has led to her and Will being ostracized from their-native community. Later, Will’s mom died which caused Will to return to Medicine River and undergo the grieving process.
