For your final project, you will finalize your grant proposal to secure funding for a neuroscience investigation. This assignment will involve integrating information covered in previous weeks about brain networks and disorders that occur as the result of dysfunction in these networks. The grant proposal will require you to identify a research question based on a thorough review of the literature related to a particular disorder/syndrome and design a scientifically sound grant proposal using current methods of neuroscience investigation.Attention Students: The Masters of Arts in Psychology program is utilizing the Pathbrite portfolio tool as a repository for student scholarly work in the form of signature assignments completed within the program. Specific Aims
As a reviewer of the two grant proposals assigned to me, I took into account the following dynamics in providing feedback. First, is whether there is a precise definition of the general research steps in the course of testing the hypothesis of both proposals. The second phase I considered is examining the aims, objectives, and goals if they indeed followed the explanation. The third factor is the description of the experimental design. In regards to the grant proposal one that has the topic that states “The Brain and Parkinson’s: Areas of research.” It has achieved the specific aims in that it has talked about the broad aspects of the common neurodegenerative disorder and the factors that lead to its existence such as the various environments as well as genetic dynamics.
Under this grant proposal, the hypothesis established incorporates the expectation of the manifold symptoms as well as the causal factors that involve each case. The specific aims of this research study have also proved the anticipation of the control group to attribute to fewer symptoms as well as the history of the less subjection to the environmental perils of other genetic risks. Also, men have been portrayed through the research to have a higher rate as opposed to women in the manifestation of the symptoms as well as the causal agents of the PD. On the other hand, the student’s grant proposal demarcated by the title “Social and Community Activities on Parkinson ‘s Disease,” after reading I can opine that it has also achieved its deemed specific aims to some level.
A major part of the research study was pronouncedly pursued on the dimension of the stipulated research hypothesis. As such, the common goals that have been specified includes the allusion of how to take care of the cognitive disorder named the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) of the Parkinson Disorder that has not yet developed to PD dementia. Research has provided an important suggestion that involves the problem-solving criteria of the daily activities. For instance, the main hypotheses of the statement have put into considerations particular course of actions such as the executive functioning, psychomotor speed, attention, visual-spatial skills as well as the memory that forms the domain that is conceded in the PD MCI.
As it is the case, one primary aim of the research study is to determine whether social activities in the arrangement of community or classroom based activities are capable of promoting cognitive skills and inhibit cognitive impairments among those victims that are diagnosed with the PD MCI. As such, the research entirely aims at determining the best social and physical activities that are capable of promoting cognition to the subjects diagnosed by the Parkinson disorder. The hypotheses have been proved to the more significant extent. In regards, it was asserted that the victims subjected to the social activity intervention have holistically manifested improvements in their cognitive functioning as opposed to the characters that are exposed to medication as a style of treatment and diagnosis.
Background
Upon conducting an exhaustive literature review of both student’s grant proposal, I was able to identify some traces of the missing pieces to some level. In essence, the factors that I used to assess and examine the missing literature in the two grant proposals entails the availability and reliability of the empirical studies, the methodological approach, theoretical perspectives, historical model as well as the real context of the research problem. To define, a research gap in the literature review is typically the research question or a problem that has not been fully attended to in the right manner or a specific field of study. In the case of the first grant proposal with the thesis “The Brain and Parkinson’s Disease: Areas of Research” the literature review has been substantiated by the fact that it has acknowledged the actual value the historical perspective of the topic under scrutiny (Parkinson’s Disease).
However, I discovered the missing gap in this grant proposal on the diverse ways of treatment of the Parkinson Disorder. Other scholars have dismissed the fact that medication is the most productive way of treating PD, but the majority have stipulated that both physical, as well as social activities, are essential in the treatment of the PD. Also, another missing gap I identify in this grant proposal is insufficient uncovering of the early signs and symptoms of the PD that can save people the big mess of the disease. Also, the research has based much on unveiling the social effects of the PD foreseeing the other types such as the religious, political as well as economic effects. Conversely, the second grant proposal with the thesis “Social and Community Activities on Parkinson’s Diseases” has a different case in the missing research study. In this case, I identified a bold missing piece in the literature review section.
As such, I identified the missing historical perspective that defines the actual historical existence of the core topic under investigation. Additionally, the research has lacked a proper dimension that has characterized the adverse effects of using the social activities among another kind of diagnosis on cognition as well as dementia. Still, in this case, the literature review has also indicated insufficiency in indicating the adverse effects of providing a community or a particular social group for adults and people with the PD.
Significance
Under this category of the research proposals, I examined the feasibility of the research and the reliability of the study to the entire context. As such, I also put into account the overall effect of the two-research proposals and the significance of the problem under investigation. In essence, I also looked at the manner in which grant proposals advanced the scientific knowledge, the clinical practice as well as the technical capability in broader dimension.
In regards to the grant proposal one, the central aim of the research was to determine the broad aspects of Parkinson’s Disorders and how they are connected to both the factors such as the genetics as well as environmental. This project is essential in addressing the PD issue which has been a fundamental phenomenon to progress in the field. In this case, as a reviewer, I can say that the research proposal grant one has achieved scientific skills as well as the clinical practices in the sense that it has provided the bold transformations on the diagnosis and treatment that have occurred in the PD. On the clinical practice, it has also provided significant advancement and improvements in technology usability. In this same case, there has been the development of the deep brain stimulation. The technical capability has been achieved in that the research has provided rich and substantial information that we can articulate and conceive and is essential in areas that are difficult to comprehend, improve future operations as well as the advance on knowledge about the issue.
Reviewing the second grant proposal with the broad title “Social and Community Activities on Parkinson’s Disease,” I identified the topic under question as crucial in the study as it provided interventions to advance cognitive functioning in many important factors. The research has been able to give the essence of treating PD that is entirely focused on managing the motor symptoms that are manifested in the course of dysregulation of dopamine level in the brain. In this case, it has uncovered the core goal of cognitive symptoms of PD. The technical capability has been achieved through realizing that PD attributed to Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) may develop into PD dementia if not managed and thus can inhibit one from performing the quality life (Litvan, Goldman, Tröster, Schmand, Weintraub, Petersen&Aarsland, 2012). The grant proposal has enhanced scientific knowledge through the fact that social associations serve vitality and as an alternative technique in the treatment of PD. It has facilitated clinical practice through suggesting other optional methods and approaches of going about with the PD and put more emphasis on the advantages of using technology in performing clinical operations.
Proposed Study
Basing on the student grant proposal labeled ” The Brain and Parkinson’s Disease: Areas of Research,” it is clear that the proposed study methodology has addressed the hypotheses highlighted in the background portion. This is due to the sense that the more information concerning the PD malady that should aid in the research. The study has suggested the necessity to collect data from a diverse PD patient coming from different demographic areas. It has also provided the collection of data from medical files sourced from facilities that diagnose and treat PD patients. Also, informed consent has been located in the section of the grant proposal through suggestion seeking permission from the deemed participants to participate in the research.
On the other case, the proposed methodology is insufficient to achieve the stipulated specific aims. On the other case, considering the second case titled “Social and Community Activities on Parkinson’s Disease” under the proposed study methodology the hypotheses listed in the background section has been achieved to the more significant extent. As such, the method has confirmed through research experimentation of particular group of social or community program can influence cognitive functioning for the PD MCI characters to articulate the different kinds of social activities that which as of significant use for the cognitive function. It has been confirmed that it increases the overall engagement of other social activities or events. This practice has also escalated the social movements. Also, the research methodology is sufficient to achieve the stated specific aims to the large extent. The core and common objective were to determine the role of social activities in improving cognition.
