Time Warner Cable Sports has signed a contract for the exclusive rights to broadcast all Laker games. This is a contract reported to be worth $3 billion dollars over 20 years. This contract has outraged sports fans in the southern California area because it will raise the price of their cable or satellite service a minimum of the required price Time Warner Cable demands for the Laker channel. This paper will discuss some research questions involved in the establishment of this contract, the hypothesis that time Warner Cable has considered the variables to be considered in turning this contract into a profitable one, and the ethical considerations both the team and Time Warner Cable had to address in the forming of the contract.
This year’s season opening game for the Los Angeles Lakers is sure to be the biggest game of the season due to the all-star lineup. Millions of Laker fans everywhere are outraged by the billion dollar contract between Time Warner and the Lakers. Not only fans but restaurant and bar owners are angry as well because most of them are DirecTV customers. DirecTV is known for their sports package, until now. This raises many questions among the minds of their fans. Why do they need their own network? Is it to help pay for the top players’ salaries? Is watching sports games on TV going to be a luxury none of us will be able to afford anymore? Is this going to be a trend with any other teams? We’re down to the days before the first game, but who will be able to watch it? Another blow to Southern California sports fans; Dodgers are looking into getting their own network as well. It’s a horrible time to be a sports fan in Southern California.
As far as coming up with a hypothesis for why Time Warner Cable would come up with such an idea; it would be prudent to take a look around and see what else is on the rise first. For instance, take a look at the economy and inflation as whole. The economic demise of the country, the global economy, and the ever so present greed that has been running rampant for years, have all contributed to this very specific case. I would assume that all Time Warner Cable is doing is executing their need to grab onto some much needed revenue. They are in a very tight market with a highly competitive group of players. There are many loyal fans of other networks that they just can’t seem to get. The smart move on their part is to corner the market share and raise the stakes. If the other networks customers don’t want to pay the increased prices, then they have a few things to think about and even fewer options to view in the comfort of their own homes. For Time Warner Cable, this is a tremendous opportunity to show that they are a force to be reckoned with.
There are many variables to be considered in the contract between Time Warner and The Los Angeles Lakers. There are millions of fans around the world that can, let alone afford any sort of cable or satellite programming, so to change to only one form of programming is going to affect businesses around the world as well. For families that do not have any sort or cable programming, Time Warner’s Triple Play package costs $89.99 a month, many families are not able to afford this. Laker fans will be forced to miss the games and businesses will be faced to go against the previous contracts with DirectTV, Adelphia, etc. that will lead to higher business costs. Some families who are not able to afford Time Warner, or the package which includes the Lakers games, will be forced to watch them separately instead of together as a family as some families do. It is still in negotiations with different networks such as DirectTV, Dish Network, AT&T U-verse, Verison Fios, Comcast, Charter Communications, and Cox Cable to able be to broadcast the Lakers games on these providers. The only problem is that the companies must first come to an agreement that cost these providers $3.95 per subscriber each month for both the SportsNet and Deportes channels. This is the highest ever charged for any regional sports network.
The deal that Time Warner and the Los Angeles Lakers organization placed together for the next twenty years is questionable and ethics are a focus of Los Angeles Lakers fans. For the past thirty years the Laker games have been broadcast on regular network television for free. As consumer it is well understood that this was a business decision by the Lakers and Time Warner, but the questions is if they ever considered the fans point of view. How ethical on their part was making the decision of having one organization control the viewing of most popular sports team in Southern California. The reason the Lakers organization became so popular was due to their fan base, which had easy access to view the televised games. Now with the new deal that was been struck with Time Warner, other cable companies and satellite companies have to pay a fee to broadcast these games or move their services to Time Warner cable, that’s is they provide service in the area. This cost will definitely be passed on the subscribers of these companies, with them having no other options. This move by the Lakers organization was and is unethical, because they did not take into consideration if their beloved fans could make such an additional monthly expense and the ticket cost to attend these games is unrealistic.
Questions, hypotheses, variables, and the ethics of the deal all point to the fact that this deal is all about big business and making money. The fans have not been taken into consideration. Unfortunately the little people pay the price for high cost entertainment.
