Evaluating Security Software
Most businesses would agree that if their security protection ever failed it could devastate or even lead their business to destruction. Having the right security software is vital to the success of all businesses. However, there are many factors to consider when evaluating security software. This report will elaborate on two competing vendors that provide security products, Norton and McAfee, both providers offer antispyware and antivirus protection. The two products we consider from the providers are Norton 360 and McAfee Total Protection for business.
Norton Symantec offers many products for business, from a small business, midsize business, enterprises and industry solutions. I choose to focus on small business products. Small business Symantec products focus on the IT needs of the business, and are tailored for companies with five to 100 employees with limited IT resources, Symantec offers small businesses enterprise-level information protection, with the speed, flexibility and cost effectiveness you need according to their website. (Norton, 2011).
The product I found for a small business is Symantec endpoint protection small business edition. The cost of this product is based upon the number of years and quantity needed. For the purpose of this paper, I picked a two year essential maintenance and quantity of ten which covers ten computers, the cost of this was $594.80. A trail ware is offered for business that are not sure if this product is right for their company. The key features of this product are antivirus and antispyware which provides malware, antivirus and spyware protection. The key benefits of this product are integrated advanced threat prevention and desktop firewall to protect against ongoing unknown threats. Simple and easy to install with automatic reports and installs less than twenty minutes. This product is also high performance, which does not slow down the daily use of applications.
The other product I choose was McAfee, which also offers solutions for business from small which is up to 249 employees, mid-size enterprise 250-999 and large enterprises which is 1000+ employees. I am choosing solutions for small business. Once small business is clicked it loads the page which offers a free trail, shop now or renew. The products offered are SaaS endpoint protection formerly known as total protection, SaaS email protection and SaaS web protection. I chose Endpoint security which is also based upon years and quantity. A three year subscription offers a lower cost per year which is $20.41 compared to buying a single year at $34.98. I selected a three year subscription and ten copies, which was a total of $612.20. The features of this product are to detect and stop viruses, spyware, adware and other unwanted programs according to their website. As for a desktop firewall, this blocks unwanted internet access to or from computers, which keeps hackers and identity thieves out of business. Also, safe searching is another key feature when employees browse or search the internet.
I believe the best product is McAfee for many reason. One of the reasons being the number of other products offered to users. I only explored one choice, but browsing the website more many other products solutions for small business such as bundles of products which include antivirus and email security packages existed. I did not notice such bundle packages on the Norton website. Also, the cost of McAfee is cheaper, for the cost of three years was $612.20 compared to the cost of Norton $594.80 which is only the cost of two year subscription. I believe the McAfee site was easier to use as well and to find information much easier compared to the Norton webpage. It took a few more clicks on the Norton page to get to the actual information of different products compared to McAfee website. Lastly, I believe the products are McAfee provide better quality to small business users as well as large business users by offering more of a selection of products based upon their business needs.
