Variables are anything that can vary such as attention, or memory and the names given to variables that applies to experimental investigations are called independent and dependent variables (Simply Psychology, 2008). The independent variable is defines as the variable the experimenter manipulates or changes, and assumed to have a direct effect on the dependent variable (Simply Psychology, 2008). The dependent variable is defines as the variable the experimenter measures, and depends on other factors (Simply Psychology, 2008). The independent and dependent variables can vary by person, but knowing the difference between the two variables will help you sharpen your problem solving skills, and explore new ideas in your future research (Simply Psychology, 2008).
Independent variables are not changed by other variables and can stand alone, and in my EBP project would be the age, race, gender, attendance in school, and what the student eats (Science Bubbies, n.d.). With independent variables you are looking to see if the variable can change other variables, or if you have a dependent variable (Science Bubbies, n.d.). The independent variable is said to be the input that changes the output (Science Bubbies, n.d.). The dependent variable, is the variable being affected by the independent variable, and that is why it’s called dependent related to the fact it depends on the independent variable (Science Buddies, n.d.). You cannot have a dependent variable without an independent variable (Science Bubbies, n.d.).

With evidence based practice change and our current practice change products, we are utilizing independent and dependent variables. The independent variable is the variable that can be changed or manipulated by the researcher. The dependent variable is the response to the experiment that is measured.
When looking at the change I am currently looking to implement in the world of childhood obesity, there are both variables present amongst the research. The independent variables would be present are the age of the children, the sex of the children and the race of the children. These are all variables that have characteristics that might affect the outcome of the experiment. Also, another independent variable present is the caloric intake and energy output. Such as boys might be more inclined to participate in physical activity then girls. The older the children are the less the parents have to explain to tell them what to do and they take more self-initiative. The dependent variables present are the amount weight gained or lost based off of the caloric intake and energy output. This will be the data collected from the experiment completed and the change in healthier meal choices as well as energy expenditure.
The variables present are intricate to the research and are necessary to be included in the research and practice change. They are the defining factors to any research project being completed.
