You should cite material in both the primary and secondary sources as you make your argument.The topic for your paper is the Monroe Doctrine. You will read statements by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, British Foreign Secretary George Canning, former president Thomas Jefferson, the Monroe Doctrine declaration itself and other primary materials. You will also read two articles by prominent historians that interpret the Monroe Doctrine much differently. Your assignment is to construct your own argument about the Monroe Doctrine in a three to five page paper (double-spaced, 12 point font).This is a completely self-contained assignment. Do not use any other materials other than those provided in the assignment. Your argumentative essay must include a thesis statement. A thesis is the particular viewpoint that you are expressing and attempting to convince the reader is the correct viewpoint.
