(For BUS3 1 4- I M: Operations Management)

(Must be done independently and due at Session 3)

Instruction: For the case and reading analysis, each of the reports must be typed within
one-page, respectively (double-spaced, around 300 words, 23 lines by using Times New
Roman, font 12, with I inch margin on each side). For the calculation questions, you must
type or write as legibly as possible. In addition, as we do in class, you must show the major
steps and keep the 4th decimal place during the calculation process and 2″d decimal (e.g.,
43.65yo, $21.09) for the final answer (if available). Finally, the assignment is due at
Session 3 and any late submission will lead to at least 157o deduction in the score.

I. Case and Reading Analysis:

1. Operations Tour, “Wegmans Food Markets” (pp. 33-36). After carefully reading the
operation tour, please write a report to highlight the key issues discussed in the reading.
Specifically, you must directly and concisely address the following three questions:

t. How do customers judge the quality of Wegmans Food Markets?
b. Indicate how and why operations issues such as forecasting, capacity planning, location, and

inventory management are important to the success of a supermarket?
c. How does Wegmans use technology to gain an edge over its competition?

2. Case, “An American Tragedy: How a Good Company Died” (pp. 66-67). After carefully
reading the case, please write a report to highlight the key issues in the case. Specifically, you
must directly and concisely address the following three issues:

a. Outline three external reasons for Burgmaster’s demise.
b. Outline three internal reasons for Burgmaster’s demise.
c. Think of an effective operations strategy that could have increased Burgmaster’s chance of

survival and explain the rationale.

3. Reading, “Gazing at the Crystal Ball” (pp. 110-111). After carefully reading the reading,
please write a report to highlight the key issues discussed in the reading. Specifically, you
must directly and concisely answer the following questions:

a. Why do we need DF technologies/systems?
b. Why do DF technologies work poorly in the real business world?
c. What suggestions does the author make in order to avoid common mistakes implementing

and using DF technologies?
