Learning Activity #1

Strategy is often considered both an art and a science.  The strategic management process requires a core understanding of the organization internally, the environment externally in which the organization operates, competition and a host of implementation challenges.  As you think about how effective leaders lead in a strategic fashion explain why the most effective strategies are both an art AND a science. 

Provide APA formatted supporting rationale/explanation for your position, i.e., be sure to provide a clear definition of strategy as an art and as a science and then use specific aspects of that definition to support your answer/position.

  

Learning Activity #2

Organizations must clearly articulate a Mission Statement and Vision Statement in order to effectively strategically plan.  Failing to understand that initial step of the Strategic Planning process often leads an organization away from, instead of towards, effective strategic planning.

Identify Ryder System, Inc.’s company mission statement and vision statement.   Review each statement and clearly explain whether each is effective or ineffective and why.  Provide APA formatted supporting rationale/explanation for your position, i.e., be sure to provide a clear definition of an effective mission statement and vision statement and then correlate aspects of that definition to the actual statements of your selected company to support your position.
