Chapter 3

After reading chapter 3 of the textbook, Philosophy the Power of Ideas, answer the following questions. Each answer should be at a minimum 1 paragraph, while others may be several paragraphs in length. The grade of A (72-80 out of 80 points) will only be assigned to exemplary submissions which demonstrate extensive thought and effort in completion of the assignment.

1)      Explain (by providing reasons) and evaluate (by giving arguments) the notion of Platonic Dualism?

2)      Explain and evaluate the views of Gorgias, Xenophanes, or Cratylus.

3)      Explain and evaluate the statement by Protagoras that “Man is the measure of all things”.

4)      Explain and evaluate the role of ‘Love’ in Plato’s philosophy.

5)      Explain Plato’s Myth of the Cave.

6)      Explain what Plato means by the word “Form”.

7)   Give an example of a philosopher from chapter 2 that you feel influenced Plato’s philosophy. Explain the conncetion you see between them.

8)      A) Where do ideas exist according to Plato? B) Explain and evaluate his theory. C) Explain your view as to where ideas ultimately exist (if they exist at all).

2)      Explain and evaluate the view of Anaximander?

3)      Explain and evaluate the view of Empedocles?

4)      Explain, evaluate and compare (by stating how they are similar or different) the views of Parmenides and Heraclitus.

5)      Explain and evaluate the views of Parmenides.

6)      Explain and evaluate the views of Pythagoras.

7)      A) Explain the terms: free will and determinism. B) Give reasons and explain whether or not you possess free will.

8)      Explain, in your opinion, which, if any, of the early Greeks had a reasonable conception of the nature of reality.
