Problem Solving Dossier

Objective: Create a problem solving dossier (PSD).

Vocabulary: Dossier-a collection or file of documents on the same subject.

The task is to design, gather, and organize information on problem solving as a collection of information, ideas, and resources that could be used in an elementary classroom.

The PSD will include the following sections-

1.

Introduction

a. Responses to the following questions and general statements about your beliefs about problem solving. You will need to do some research; the text is a starting place. (1-3 pages)

i. What is problem solving? Examine the concept of problem solving from at least 3 different disciplines (math, history, science, music, PE, etc)

ii. How is problem solving different from calculating answers to a series of math problems.

iii. Why do we need to teach problem solving in math?

iv. When should problem solving be taught in elementary school?

2. A section discussing methods, steps, strategies for problem solving. You will need to do some research. The text is a starting place.(2-4 pages)

3. A collection of math problem solvers, math puzzlers, and math brainteasers organized by math domain (refer to Math CCSS) At least 10.

a. Each problem, problem solver, puzzler and brainteaser must be accompanied by

i. a statement explaining what strategy/ies would be best to apply in working the problem (the text lists 7 strategies, other resources may have similar or slightly different strategies)

ii. How you would envision using the particular problem with students

iii. Grade level range

iv. Why you selected that particular problem

v. Potential responses to the problem

vi. Reference citation of where you found the problem

4. A list of resources for problem solving. This should include information for teaching problem solving as well as resources for locating problems. The resources list should include books, journals, and online resources.-At least2 of each.

5. A works cited page.
