Prompt

Find and watch a television commercial for a product you like. You will break down the commercial to identify how the commercial demonstrates principles discussed in the course. Specifically, address the following in your paper:

· Part One: SWOT Analysis: Complete a SWOT analysis of the product or service in the commercial. Give several specific examples of each factor and describe why they are internal or external factors.

· Part Two: Target Market: What buyer characteristics do you imagine the business looked at when targeting its market using the four segmentation categories (geographic, demographic, psychographic, and behavioral characteristics) for the commercial?

· Part Three: Marketing Strategies: How are the 4 Ps (product, price, promotion, and place) applied in the commercial? Give specific examples of how this commercial use the 4 Ps to create a marketing strategy to gain a competitive advantage.

Format

The midterm is a five-paragraph essay: introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Use the Midterm Paper Template document provided

.

1. Introduction

· Engage the reader with an introductory hook.

· Example: Television commercials are a part of the average Americans’ day-to-day life, but one may not realize all of the many factors that contribute to their development.

· Describe the chosen commercial in sufficient detail to establish a context for your analysis.

· Write a thesis statement that includes the three parts in the body of the paper.

· Example: This paper will analyze Pepsi’s 2012 Super Bowl commercial to identify and make inferences about the SWOT analysis, target market, and marketing strategies that shaped the advertisement.

2. First body paragraph

· Topic sentence should establish what this paragraph is about, which is the SWOT analysis.

· Example: It would have been important for Pepsi to consider the internal and external factors of the beverage market before developing this commercial.

· Use specific examples from the commercial, your coursework, and (if appropriate and necessary) outside sources to illustrate all of your answers to the

first part

of the prompt.

· Example: The Pepsi brand utilizes the color blue. This example illustrates the importance of having a recognizable brand, which is a strength and a crucial part of the SWOT analysis.

· Use the last sentence to wrap up your thoughts and transition to the next paragraph.

· Example: In addition to considering the strengths and weaknesses of its brand, a business would need to consider its strengths and weaknesses too. By conducting a SWOT analysis, a business can remain competitive in its market.

3. Second body paragraph

· Topic sentence should establish what this paragraph is about, which is the target market.

· Use specific examples from the commercial, your coursework, and (if appropriate and necessary) outside sources to illustrate all of your answers to the

second part

of the prompt.

· Use the last sentence to wrap up your thoughts.

4. Third body paragraph

· Topic sentence should establish what this paragraph is about, which is the marketing strategies.

· Example: Pepsi uses multiple strategies to capitalize on marketing opportunities. One of its marketing strategies is a low-cost strategy, offering coupons during summer holidays such as the Fourth of July.

· Use specific examples from the commercial, your coursework, and (if appropriate and necessary) outside sources to illustrate all of your answers to the

last part

of the prompt.

· Use the last sentence to wrap up your thoughts.

5. Conclusion

· Restate your thesis.

· Draw conclusions and reflect upon the big picture.

· Example: All the topics in marketing relate to each other, and a business needs to be aware of its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats before it knows what market it is targeting or how to integrate the 4 Ps (product, price, promotion, and place) in its commercials. Pepsi tailors its commercials in one way or another to meet the needs of different segments of customers. This is one of the more difficult concepts in marketing and one of the most important to the success of a business.
