Multiple Source Research Essay
Assignment:
You will select the name of a city at random from choices provided by your instructor.
You will then write an argumentative essay about that city. This means that you should be proving something about that city to your readers. You are trying to convince them to agree with you about the city.
Example Thesis Statements:
*Stockholm, Sweden is the best city in the world to raise a family.
*The government of Detroit, Michigan should hire its unemployed residents to help repave its streets and highways.
*Apple should move its corporate headquarters to London, England.
*Reykjavík, Iceland is the most accommodatable city to host the next Winter Olympics.
*Los Angeles, California needs a professional football team to stimulate its economy.
You may choose whatever argument you want as long as your thesis statement is narrow and focused. (ie avoid “Chicago is the best city” or “New York City needs improvement)
It may be necessary for you to do a bit of research on your selected city before you choose your argument.
Structure
*Introduction
-Attention grabbers
-Basic background information about the city (ie location, population, founding, claim to fame, etc.)
-Thesis Statement
*Body
-Topic Sentence with a transition
-Use of both direct quotes and/or paraphrases in every body paragraph
-Use of at least two statistics within your body paragraphs
*Conclusion with a “call to action”
Sources:
*You are required to use at least three outside sources to support your argument
-2 Print Sources
-1 Internet Source (no wikipedia)
Your sources do not need to relate to your topic directly. For instance, an essay about LA needing a football team can include sources relating more directly to the game of football, the NFL, or other cities where sports have stimulated their economy.
Please either go to Truman’s library or Harold Washington Library (State and Van Buren)
Feel free to share your sources with your fellow classmates, but do not rely on them to do all the work for you.
