TheStages of a Relationship
A people interact, relationships develop mainly between two characters. Friendship has been identified as the foundation of many relationships. It is from this friendship that relationships develop between two characters mainly of the opposite sex. There are several stages that relationships undergo starting from the initiation stage. Some relationships do not follow the order in these stages and at the same time some of the relationships do not go through all the stages. Most of the relationships have a very promising beginning but end up on with a very low tone even before the partners get into marriage. One of the most important stages in a relationship is the stable stage where the characters begin learning each others likes and dislikes. It is also in this stage that the relationship matures and the characters begin appreciating each other.
Initiating stage
This is usually the first stage for many relationships. In this stage, people get to know each other’s character as they interact. This stage has also been described as the friendship stage by some scholars. This is because it starts with friendship as the characters get to interact in their daily activities. In most cases, this stage starts as people meet in social groups or at workplaces. This stage can either be long or short but this is determined by the two characters and how fast they get to learn each other.
On my side, I met Elizabeth and the relationship stated on friendship bases where we got to learn each other. We met in the church youth group where we could interact and share ideas. I could get a chance to talk to her in these youth group where we met weekly during school holidays. Though the process was a bit slow, I took my time in expressing my feelings to her. Still on friendship bases, we could share academic materials and helped each other in school work during the holidays. We could also visit each other’s home though it rarely happened.
Exploratory stage
This is the second stage where people get to learn each other better. This stage is usually longer than the initiating stage. In this stage, one gets to know the likes and dislikes of his or her partner. It is also in this stage that the characters get to know the life history of each other. This is mainly the academic background, religion and their ambitions in life.
Elizabeth and I took this stage with seriousness and we dedicated most of our time in learning each other. By the end of this stag, we had known each other better. I had plenty of time in identifying her likes and dislikes. It is also through the interaction in this stage that we learnt of each other’s education and religious background. Despite the differences between us in terms of religious background, we accepted this and appreciated each other. The differences between us kept us together as we shared
Intensification stage
This stage is characterized by more mature characters where they get into higher gears in the relationship. In this stage, the characters begin to know the reason behind each other likes and dislikes. It is also in this stage that the two characters begin developing common areas of interest. There is also acceptance despite each other’s areas of weakness. Most of the characters in this stage get to accept both the strong and weak points of their partners. This makes their relationship lively by learning to accept each other’s weak points.
During this stage, Elizabeth and I stated developing strong feelings toward each other. It is through the common areas of interest that we developed that we came to identify some common things between us. This was through doing a deep analysis of Elizabeth’s likes and comparing them with mine. In this stage, the relationship began to intensify. We had our own ways of interacting through phone calls, Short messages and letters. This contributed to making our relationship stronger because we kept in touch despite the long distance between our homes.
Stable stage
This is the stage that the characters develop several things in common that brings them closer to each other. There is also sharing of some deeper secrets and knowing some of the unrevealed things about each other. In this stage, Elizabeth and I could visit some places and met each other’s friends. It is also in this stage that we came to learn of each other’s relatives
Decline stage
In this stage, the characters begin losing interest in each other resulting to dislikes. The characters begin to lose the touch they had in the previous stages. In our case, we stated developing some dislikes in each other and we could not appreciate what we did together. There was also a decline in the frequency of making the phone calls and sending the short messages. Letter writing also became affected because we rarely sent letters to each other. We also stopped visiting each other’s home as we used to do before. This contributed to decline in communication between us which affected our relationship.
Every relationship has it own unique way of communicating and moving from stage to another depending on the partners. Feelings and admiration to between partners can determined the time between each stage and how far can the relation ship develop. Although some people have feeling and admiration to others, they never end up in a relationship. The reason behind that is that they find it hard to express their feelings.
