Course Guidelines:
Seminar Topic Selection (For Non-thesis track students):
• Must be clearly relevant to chemistry and/or biochemistry.
• Must be a recent, active research topic.
• Must involve chemical studies and chemical insight, including discussions of molecular structure,
chemical reactivity, and molecular interactions.
• NO: Excessive clinical data, mouse studies, biology / psychology studies, mathematics, computer
science.
• Must be approved. If your talk is not an appropriate topic, points will be deducted.
Seminar Topic Selection (For Thesis track students):
• The seminar should be based on your thesis research.
• If you do not think that you will have enough data to present a 30-minute talk, you could talk about
the significance, specific aims, hypothesis, research design, and the possible deliverables of your
project.
Oral Presentation:

• The written report will be due by 5 pm on April 21st.
Other Guidelines:
• Do not use notecards for talks.
• Business dress is recommended for the presentation.
• Your scheduled seminar cannot be delayed or rescheduled. With explicit approval from instructor,
you can switch with someone, if both parties are willing.
• Be prepared to answer questions relating to both the science and broader context of your talk.
Expect questions that may not be directly related to your data or results.
• Students must ask questions. Try to aim for asking at least one question every two talks.
• Prepare for your talk well in advance of your scheduled date.
