As part of our ongoing effort to connect course content with real-world examples, you are asked to explore recent news articles and identify instances where business strategy concepts are being applied or discussed. This activity will help reinforce your understanding of the material and provide valuable context for class discussions.
Instructions:
Choose Reliable Sources: Look for reputable news sources that cover business and financial news, such as The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Bloomberg, Forbes, and Harvard Business Review. You may also explore local and regional business publications to discover examples that are relevant to businesses in Calgary.
Select Articles: Focus on articles that have been published within the last three months to ensure that the examples are current and relevant. Aim to find two articles from different publishers that have somewhat different perspectives on the topic in the news.
Analyze the Content: Carefully read each article and consider how the news story relates to the course material.
Prepare a Summary:
Title and source of the article
Date of publication
Main points or key message of the article. (Don’t list details but rather summarize and prioritize the ideas.)
Connection to the course material (specific theories, terms, or frameworks).
Any additional insights you have
Submit your summary and a link to the articles. If you are taking an in-person class, also be prepared to share your findings with the class.
Examples:
The article “How a cheap, brutally efficient grocery chain is upending America’s supermarkets” might get you to think about the value chain analysis (Module 8) and give you some clear examples of how Aldi is able to drive value for customers while keeping costs low.
The article “Is this 3D-printed home made of clay the future of housing?” might get you to think of an external trend of 3D-printing that will impact business decisions (PESTEL and Business Model Canvas). It might also get you thinking about disruptive technology (Module 10) and the different industries that might be disrupted and radically changed because of 3D-printing applications.
