This is the final week of the session! I hope you have been found our work with Java rewarding.

In this week’s discussion we have two primary areas of emphasis:

  • Describe basic data structures such as linked-lists, maps, sets, stacks, and queues.
  • Describe events and event handling for Java Swing applications.
  • These data structures are essential for Java development with many practical applications. Java programs form large to small make use f these data structures. Because the majority of Java applications are implemented in user environments with GUI interfaces, much Java programming is event-driven in nature. Can you think of commonly used Java classes essential for event handling?

I found everything about this course compelling. I had taken a previous Java course but did not have the opportunity to learn about linked lists and arrays. I thoroughly enjoyed building and adding to my project each week. The knowledge I have gained from this course can be applied in the real world. Each week, I was able to learn something more compelling than the week before. Throughout this course, I was able to demonstrate Intermediate-level java programming, which was very rewarding for myself. I plan to use this knowledge and apply it to real world scenarios in my future endeavors.

The discussion boards proved to be extremely helpful throughout this course as it also allowed me to gain knowledge from my peers. The discussion boards allowed room for improvement through the feedback that was provided from my instructor and peers. The discussion boards are actually a really great approach for us to interact and help each other. In the areas where I was weak, some of my classmates were stronger. I truly appreciate the meaningful feedback I received from my peers. It was also great being able to see the creative ideas that my classmates came up with.

The only other thing that I can think of that could have yield additional Valuable information is maybe a group project. I have had previous classes were we had group projects and i thoroughly enjoyed completing those projects with my classmates as we were able to learn from each other, share thoughts and ideas, and also have fun while doing so. Altogether, Instructor Noffsinger was great and I am truly appreciative of the time he put into making sure we understood everything and his patience. Best of luck to everyone in this final week and I hope to work with some of you again in future courses.

    2nd peer to respond to

    Hello class,

Another great session coming to an end. I would like to answer questions asked in this week assignment.

What were the most compelling topics learned in this course?

The most compelling topic in this course for me is GUI part of the application. I did all my GUI code and did not use scene builder generated code. It helped me understand how to build various components of the GUI and their placements in the window. I went this route mainly because I wanted to learn how code works when creating GUI. It was very fun process to start with blank page and end up with cool running program.

  • How did participating in discussions help your understanding of the subject matter? Is anything still unclear that could be clarified?
  • Discussion board posts from my classmates helped me gratefully. I have read every post to see how the classmates solved the problems provided in the assignment. I would compare to my point of view and use combined method of both to develop my application every week. The best part of the session is the week 4 discussion board. I really enjoy reviewing my peer’s projects. I saw different idea of solving problems and it gave me ideas how can I improve mine.

What approaches could have yielded additional valuable information?

I wish I had more time to attend live chat and not watch recording. Live chats scheduled usually during my work hours so I could not ask questions I had live. Another approach I could find useful is the code examples in the live chat. I struggled in week 3 IP because I tried to create “evaluate” button method and was doing it wrong. I spent two days trying to figure it out, but then it clicked, and I was able to submit my work on time. That is the most rewarding part about Java class when you finally get it right.

Thank you everyone in this class for participation in discussion boards conversations. Thank you, professor, for answering my questions in the timely manner. I wish everyone good luck with future education. Stay on the right track and be safe out there.

    Petr Fedotov.
