Introduction to Tableau
• Tableau Software is the name of a company that makes
visualization software with the same name, Tableau.
• Their products:
– Tableau Desktop
– Tableau Server
– Tableau Reader
– Tableau Online (cloud based)
– Tableau Public (cloud based)
– Tableau Vizable (mobile app)

Options for MIS 3210 students to
Access Tableau
1. Use the Desktop version installed on any PC
in FCB Lab room (373/377)
2. Set up for off-site work on your personal
computer. (See the course Tableau
Announcement page.)
3. Access umapps Virtual Desktop>Tableau
Instructions for Activity #8
• Activity #8 will give you a first introduction to
the Tableau interface including:
– Connecting to a data source
– Navigating the interface
– Constructing one visualization
– Save and upload a Tableau Workbook
• The steps for Activity #8 are provided on the
following slides.
Launch Tableau
Tableau Home Page
Select
“Microsoft Excel”
Find and Select “Act#8-Tableau Practice Data (XLS)
Oops!
It should
say Act#8!
Since there is only one
worksheet it gets
automatically selected
otherwise you may
need to drag your
selected worksheet
(now table in Tableau)
into the white
workspace)
Click on Sheet1
Note the “fields” under “Tables”
Select & drag:
– Gender to Columns
– Balance to Rows
Your first Tableau Visualization
Experiment
with some of
the alternate
styles on the
“Show Me” tab
Start a new visualization on the next workbook tab
Build the next visualization
Select and drag:
Prod-Cat to Columns
Balance to Rows
Try ‘pivoting’ the chart or selecting different
styles on the “Show Me” tab
Pivot 90 degrees
Heat Map
Rename new sheet to “Practice2” and
select Save AS
IMPORTANT: Save your Tableau workbook as a
“Tableau Packaged Workbook (*.twbx)
Select the correct file type! I CANNOT OPEN the .twb file that is the default selection.
Upload your saved Tableau workbook to the Act#8
