I’ve moved all around being in the service, but Austin, Texas is
home. To start, the Supreme Court justices are voted on in statewide
partisan elections (elections in which the candidate’s political affiliation
is disclosed, if any), and they serve terms of six years. There are nine
judges. Their qualifications include: US citizenship, residency in Texas,
be licensed to practice law in the state, must be within the ages of 3575 and must be a practicing lawyer/judge for 10 years. The most
recent judiciary amendment to the Texas constitution allows for judges
to serve if they have been voted in before their 75th birthday. The
chief justice of this court is selected by voters at large and are also held
to a six year term. The term “voters at large” is a method of voting
where the voter can choose one or more candidates when voting.

In the case of a vacancy within the supreme court, the state governor
appoints a judge who will be confirmed by the Texas State Senate. The
judge will then serve until the next general election.
The same exact criteria and voting policies go for the Texas Court of
Criminal Appeals.
The Texas Court of Appeals holds partisan elections at the district
level. As of January 2013 there are 36 districts in the state with 14
regions and 80 authorized judge positions. (TJB) These elections are
held every six years. The same qualifications apply as above for this
position.
The judges of Texas District Courts are chosen within each district in
partisan elections. The same qualifications apply with exception to
age. A candidate must be 25-75 years old for office. There are nine
administrative judicial regions. Each region has an appointed judge by
the governor. These judges can be either previously elected district
judges or retired district judges with at least 12 years of service or
more. District courts oversee felony criminal cases, divorce cases, cases
involving land title, election contest cases, civil cases amounting to
