Purpose

Book indexing is still a major activity in the indexing world, albeit not the only one. Old fashion publishing is still alive and well (and growing) and so far no acceptable computer program exists that will adequately index a book automatically. Note: If you are interested in freelance indexing, this is where the greatest opportunities are.

Procedures

Select a non-fiction book of your choice. The book should have a minimum of 200 pages. (Please don’t look at the index!)

Write a short synopsis of the book so I will understand the content, in case I am unfamiliar with the book, which is likely.

Index the first 3 chaptersHelp aids:- Read Chapters 13 and 14 of the textbook- The Chicago Manual of StyleLinks to an external site. has a lengthy chapter on indexing style and I would urge all of you to consult it. This famous reference book is available in almost any library and online.

Study the indexes in a number of books and decide on a format that you like and feel comfortable with.

Generate the index using SkyIndex or a word processor.

–       Note: Don’t forget page numbers for your entries!! This is essential for a book index.
