The purpose of the final project is to bring together several of the ideas we have considered this

semester into the evaluation of a textbook or set of curriculum materials.

For the project, you must:

1. Identify a textbook or set of curriculum materials for a Grade (e.g. 6th) or Subject (e.g., Algebra

II). Unlike our class activities, your evaluation will focus on an entire grade or subject. If you are

currently teaching, you have the option to evaluate the textbook/materials that you use for your

classroom (or you can examine another set of materials – this could be useful if you sometimes

supplement your current materials). If you are not currently teaching, you can use materials

(e.g., EngageNY or Illustrative Mathematics) that are available online.

2. Evaluate the materials by responding to the questions from the Brahier textbook (p. 121 – also

pasted below).

• In your evaluation, you should consider at entire subject/grade. Not just a single module or

chapter.

• In responding to the questions, your answers must be more in-depth than a simple “yes” or

“no.” You must provide examples for each of your responses. Your goal is to “argue” for the

validity of your assessment of the textbook/curriculum materials. So, you must provide

support for your evaluation.

3. After responding to the questions, provide a summary statement outlining your overall

recommendation regarding these materials. Would you adopt them for your school? Why or

why not?
