We talked about breaking MASCs, idiomorphs and Sukhotin’s algorithm. Next week, we’ll take
a more mathematical look at the shift and affince ciphers, and move on to the Renaissance,
where nomenclators (combination codes + cipher) were popular, and polyalphabetic substitution
ciphers were invented.

Handing it in: Submit to the d2l submission folder. Use some standard format for your homework (Word

sure the writing is legible (pencils often do not show up well in pictures). The vast majority of your
assignment should be typed. Please include all work in a single file (don’t use zip). The class

1. (Reading Assignment) Read Sections 2.7-2.11 (1st edition) or Sections 1.10-1.15 (2nd edition).

2. (Recognizing languages, 12pt) You intercepted the following three ciphertexts a) through c)
below; you know that the original plaintexts are written in English, German, French, Spanish or
Italian, You also know that the ciphers used were simple transposition ciphers. For each
ciphertext, determine the most likely source language without breaking the cipher. You do not
have to find out which particular cryptosystem was used.
You cannot assume that the examples are taken from different languages, so for each of the
following cases, make your best and most convincing argument why it is in the language you
determined, and not in the others. Argue by comparing several (not just one or two) letter
frequencies. Credit will be assigned not just be for the correct answer, but also for how
convincing your argument is.

Hint: you can use the substitution cipher spreadsheet to perform frequency analysis. I’ve
uploaded a version which contains frequencies for English, French, Italian and Spanish. Sort the
letters by frequency (highest to lowest, use the Data tab), that’ll make it easier to compare
frequencies. (There’s also the frequency analsyis tool from the last homework.) You can also use
wikipedia’s page frequency distribution page which has frequency counts in many languages, and
allows you to sort by both letter and frequency (for each language separately). Look for signal
letters that help you tell two languages apart, so letters whose frequencies differ a lot between the
two languages.
3. (Substitution Cipher, 20pt) Your goal is to break a substitution cipher (with word separations).
Each student will break a different ciphertext. To get your ciphertext, look at the end of this
document. First, find your name on the list at the end of the document. The number of the
ciphertext you must decipher is to the left of your name. The numbered ciphertexts are below
the list of names. Make sure you decipher the correct ciphertext, or you will not receive credit.
The ciphertext is based on text from a 19th century novel. Attack the cipher with the tools we saw
and mentioned in class (frequency analysis, frequent words, short words, even idiomorphs if you
want, but there may be proper names in the text which could throw off the analysis based on
idiomorphs).
You can solve the cipher by hand on paper, or, more easily, using the substitution cipher
spreadsheet we used in class as well.
When writing up your solution, include details about how you proceeded, including information
about what decisions you made, why you made them, and (if necessary), why you went back on
an earlier decision.
Include several intermediary snapshots of partially restored plaintext as you reconstruct it.
Note: do submit your solution even if you don’t manage to break the cipher entirely. There will
be partial credit.
4. (Sukhotin’s Algorithm, 8pt) Run Sukhotin’s algorithm on the ciphertext
‘KUJLVKNMXURKJMCI’
to identify the 5 ciphertext letters corresponding to vowels in the plaintext. Do this by hand on
paper, or using a text-editor/spreadsheet. Document each step of how the matrix develops, and
which letter/letters you identify as a vowel/vowels in each step.
Separately, and explicitly, state the list of vowels-letters you found.
