SOC 230 INTRODUCTION TO ETHNIC
STUDIES!
About the Course
This course views majority and minority relations and
confronts, challenges, and motivates students to know
themselves better and understand some societal
problems: for example, racism, prejudice, etc. The course
deals with the degree to which ethnic relations involve
questions of economic and political power and the
distribution of the power. It looks at American society’s
institutional role in maintaining and perpetuating
systematic inequality.

Attendance (10%): Your grade will suffer if you miss
class, attendance counts! Unless followed by doctor’s note
or death in the family, any missed attendance cannot be
excused. See extra credit to make up an absence.
Essay’s (60%): During the semester you will be turning
in 3 Essays. These are based on the readings, class
discussions, and activities the prompts. See the next page
for essay format. These will be due at 8:45 pm the day
listed in the syllabus. Must be 3-4 pages in length.
Final (30%): Final will be due April 25 at 8:45pm. The
final will be an in-class group presentation that will count
for 50% of the final exam. The other 50% will be your
account of how the group assignment went and your
reflection of the material. No late papers accepted past
this time. See the last page for more details.
Extra Credit (5%): only 2 opportunities at 5% each.
It’s your responsibility to arrange what that is. This can
include, attending events, movie, documentary reviews
(not those watched in class), or book review. Format
same as Essays including page length.

From early colonization on, racialization has been part of the
story of the United States.
Africans were brought as slaves in huge numbers: nearly 4
million by 1780.
Their responses to slavery varied from rebellion to passivity
to cultural development to hostility.
With abolition, life for former slaves did not change quickly
or evenly.
