Part 3
Apocalyptic Hero’s Journey through the Afterlife (Final)
Instructions
Over the course of this semester, you have learned about archetypes and pantheons, mythical objects and
monsters, sacred locations, creation myths, natural disaster myths, afterlife myths, apocalyptic myths, and now
the hero’s journey.
For your final, you will be creating a PowerPoint presentation (with a possible small written portion–see item III
below) that incorporates the apocalypse, the afterlife, and the hero’s journey. Please make sure that your slides do
not contain too much text because they become hard to read, and that each slide has an image that ties to the
information on the slide.
You all have the same backstory: Kali and Tiamat are feuding with Huitzilopochtili and Ahayu’da, and a great
plague is released on humanity, killing a large percentage of people and turning the dead into zombies.
I. For the first part of your presentation, you are to create 5 to 15 slides, which will address the following
parts of the apocalypse:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
What signs or prophecies indicate the end of the world?
Description of how society breaks down after the release of the plague (looting, war, etc).
How did your hero escape the plague?
Where did your hero go after society breaks down?
Was your hero alone, or did they band together with other survivors? What kind of skills do your hero an
the others have that would help them survive the end of the world?
What kind of supplies was your hero able to take with them?
Are there other monsters than zombies? If so, how did they come about?
A mystical object that can save humanity.
II. For the second part of your presentation, your hero is embarking on their hero’s journey…through the
afterlife/underworld. You need to create 20 to 40 slides, integrating 10 of the 12 steps of the hero’s journey (liste
in red below) as they navigate the underworld you are going to create (you can have all of the steps of the hero’s
journey, but you MUST have the 10 listed below):
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Call to adventure: this is where your hero realizes they are the only one who can save humanity.
Supernatural aid: this is when your hero is going to encounter the god/goddess of knowledge you created
in your pantheon.
Crossing the threshold: this is where your hero moves from the ordinary world to the underworld.
Multiple levels to your afterlife (i.e. a heaven-type level for good people, and a hell-like level for bad
people).
The Road of Trials: this should include a minimum of 5 monsters of your own creation and 5 obstacles
that your hero has to overcome.
Spells/Prayers: write a minimum of 10 spells/prayers that your hero will use to overcome the trials they
face in the underworld.
Temptation: create something that would tempt the hero to abandon their journey (i.e. an ideal life; the
return of a lost loved one; etc.)
Judgment by your god/goddess of the underworld: this will determine whether your hero is pure enough
to obtain the mystical object that will save humanity.
o This should be structured as a dialogue, where your god/goddess asks a series of questions and
your hero responds with epithets (praise for the deity, like “oh blessed god of the underworld, or
any other praise you can come up with), and the final judgment by your deity.
Atonement: this should be what the hero has to do in order to prove they are worthy of handling the
mythical object that will save humanity.
Sacrifice: your hero must be willing to offer up their own life in order to save humanity, which could be
part of your atonement.
The ultimate boon: the mystical object that your hero can use to save humanity. You need to include a
description of the object and how the hero will wield it, to save humanity,
Magic flight: the hero must now escape the underworld with this mystical object, but how will that
happen?
Rescue from without: the magic flight will get your hero out of the underworld, but it’s not enough to get
your mystical object to where it needs to go to save humanity; your hero needs someone to help them get
to where they need to go with the object.
Return: this is where the hero is able to save humanity using the mystical object and the wisdom gained
on this journey. You hero is able to pass this wisdom on to humanity, to ensure its survival.
III. For the written portion, you only need to include this portion if you cannot adequately explain everything
in your slides (without having too much text present). If you need to add any details that are useful in
understanding your PPT, you can put everything in this document. Please keep in mind that your final should
primarily take place in your PowerPoint presentation, and the written portion should only be used if you need
extra space.

Explain Your Mythologies
Please describe the mythologies you have created all semester. Talk
about some of the powers that your deities have, how you “created” the
world, what lead to the natural disaster, how many levels of the afterlife
has, what mystical object saved humanity from the end of the world.
You can discuss anything from your own mythologies, but please try to
mention something from each myth (including the pantheon) you
developed.
