Advantage and disadvantages of using amoxicillin in the treatment of bacterial skin infections.
One of the infectious skin conditions is cellulitis which is a bacterial skin infection caused by the gram-positive strains of the streptococcus and staphylococcus or other organisms. Cellulitis occurs mostly in the legs, but it can appear anywhere in the body. It forms a painful red infection that is often warm to touch. One of the antibiotics used to treat the condition is amoxicillin. The advantage of using the drug in the treatment of cellulitis is that the drug does not affect other cells in the body (Gillespie et al., 2015). Also, it can be used by people of all ages.
The disadvantage of using the drug is that it has side effects like vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. Moreover, when the drug is used repeatedly or for prolonged periods, it may result in new vaginal yeast infections or to oral thrush. In the case of the misuse of the drug, the drug develops resistance to the bacterial infections and therefore it may no longer be effective in the treatment of the bacterial infections (Gillespie et al., 2015). It is therefore important that the drug regime is adhered to and if the side effects persist the patient should be advised to seek medical attention or to report to the doctor who prescribed the drug.
